In Memory Of

Kathrine A. “Kay” Young, age 64, of Helena

July 9, 1950 – January 14, 2015

Kathrine Ann (Higgins) Young

Kathrine “Kay” Ann Young passed away peacefully at home with her husband and her son at her side on Wednesday, January 14, 2015. Kay was born in Helena, Montana to Dorothy and James Higgins on July 9, 1950.

Kay attended St. Helena Grade School and graduated from Helena Cathedral High School in 1968. She married the love of her life on August 19, 1971. They celebrated 43 years together and raised two wonderful sons. Kay was a natural born mother and nurturer, constantly looking after and caring for her children, siblings, parents and her Aunt June Gable. She always had a smile for everyone and her pleasant personality made her many friends throughout her life.

Kay started working at a young age starting with the A&W Drive Inn while she was in high school. She later worked at the Montana Department of Transportation where her smile won her the title of Miss Montana Highways in 1971. In 1979 she went to work for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana retiring in 2005. Although she had many jobs throughout her life none were more rewarding to her than being a mother.

She enjoyed planting and taking care of her flower gardens and reading her favorite authors. Her greatest sorrow was the death of her oldest son Justin in 2003.

Kay was preceded in death by her father Jim Higgins, sons Michael and Justin Young, and Aunt June Gabel.

Kay is survived by her husband Homer, her son Philip of Vancouver Washington, Mother Dorothy Higgins, brothers – Tom (Sherri) Higgins; Jim Higgins, and John (Jackie) Higgins of Auburn, Washington, sisters – Helen Higgins; Marian Higgins of Bozeman; Jean (Jim) Sewell of Bigfork, Montana, Aunt Marjorie Merrill, cousins – Marsha Merrill, and Joe Merrill and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Weiner, his nursing staff, the caring and compassionate staff with Hospice of St. Peter’s, Msgr. Kevin S. O’Neill and the Cathedral of Saint Helena.

A funeral Mass will be 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2015 from the Cathedral of Saint Helena. A reception will follow in the Brondel Center located in the lower level of the Cathedral. Kay’s cremated remains will be laid to rest in the columbarium niche following the Rite of Committal which will be approximately 2:50 p.m. at the memorial shelter of the Montana State Veterans Cemetery. Memorials may be made on Kay’s behalf to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation, P.O. Box 871847, Kansas City, MO 64187-1847 or a memorial of the donor’s choice.
