Ken was my brother-in-law for almost 36 years. He was a very talented man and a phenomenal gardener. Ken had a green thumb like no one else I know. He could grow flowers, trees, fruits and vegetables, and house plants that were healthy and vibrant. One day I stopped by and in the window there was this gorgeous house plant that had large, deep purple flowers. I just loved it and asked Ken if he could get me a starter from it. He wasn’t sure but said he would give it a try. A couple of months later I received a plant in dirt from him. He wasn’t sure if it would grow….but it certainly did. I have had it for several years now. I let it go dormant every winter and then all spring and summer I enjoy a beautiful indoor plant with deep purple flowers. I will always think of Ken when the flower blooms.

How to pick a memory or two to share out of a friendship that spanned decades? There were so many hunting trips, fishing trips, camping trips, drives in the mountains, hikes, etc. that the stories that could be shared would take days to tell and pages to fill. We are fortunate to have so many great memories, along with lots of video of Ken narrating for us our camping adventures.

Ken was a true friend through and through. When Roger worked out of town Ken and Theresa came to Tina’s rescue a couple of times that easily come to mind – one time in the middle of the night when she needed help getting a vehicle home and another time when Nate got his truck stuck in the middle of one of the worst snow storms we’d had in quite some time – once Ken found out Tina was going to head out by herself to pick Nate and his friend up, he showed up to drive Tina into the mountains even though it was one of those evenings that nobody should have been out on the road.

Roger remembers one hunting trip that he and Ken decided to ride their bicycles to look for elk. As they rounded a corner after hours of pedaling their bikes around the mountains, Ken was so tired he simply fell off his bicycle on that corner.

Tina has always smiled every time she looks at the dent in Roger’s thermos. Ken and Roger would often go fishing, hunting, driving around, or something, and would each take a thermos of coffee with them. Roger bought a new thermos and the next couple times they did something together and took their thermoses something just wasn’t right. Finally, Ken took a rock and put a dent in Roger’s thermos. He said it just wasn’t normal to have a thermos that wasn’t all beat up.

We will miss Ken so much, but feel certain he’s up there chasing elk and catching fish completely pain free.
