Larry Shanahan, 68, of Helena

June 15, 1952 – July 16, 2020

Larry Shanahan, 68, passed away on July 16,2020 in Aurora, Colorado at Rocky mt VA center.  He was diagnosed in May of interstitial lung disease. Larry, the doctors and nurses gave a good fight for 14 days. he passed with his wife, Phylis, and son, Connor, by his side. Larry was born in Great Falls on June 15,1952 to Raymond and Elizabeth Shanahan, he was the middle child of 11. He was extremely proud to be raised in the little town of Augusta, Mt. Larry got drafted right out of High School, and went into the Army. He spent his tour in Korea. He worked for the Helena School Dist. for 22 years till he went legally blind in 2016. It didn’t slow him down at all still had a great attitude. He still loved to golf and follow his Yankees, Jets and Celtics.

Larry and Phylis were together for 37 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents Raymond Shanahan, Elizabeth Shanahan, 2 brothers, Raymond (Jack), Francis (Frank) Shanahan, sister Rose Marie (Tiger) Albracht.

He is survived by his wife, Phylis, daughter Sunshine Goss, grandchildren, Lila, Ryan and Dixie, son Connor Shanahan, five sisters Kathy (Ron) Griffith of Washington, MaryAnn (Ed) White of Texas, Betty Shanahan, Helena, Eileen O’Brian, Helena, Mona Byers, Butte, as well as two brothers Michael (Danny) Shanahan of Fort Shaw, Pat (Val) Shanahan of Arizona.

Larry will be cremated and laid to rest at Fort Harrison in Helena. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday June 12, 2021  at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery, 1900 Heroes Road, Fort Harrison. Please join us for a celebration of life after the service at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds, 98 West Custer Avenue, Helena. The Family would like to give special thanks to the VA hospital in Aurora and Helena for all they did, and to Dr. Mazur and staff in Great Falls.     So glad we got reacquainted a few years ago at the class reunion. I will always remember him in the plaid pants of the day. I had such a crush on him as did most of the girls. He was always so fun to be around. Thank you also for you service Sir! Although I never met Conner and only slightly know Phylis, know I’m thinking of you both and your greatest loss. What great memories you must be sharing. Hugs to you both

    Phylis & family,
    My thoughts and prayers have been with you since I learned of Larry’s passing. I have so many fond memories growing up with him and our time as kids in Augusta. He was such a gentle man and it was really wonderful to see him and you a few years back at the class reunion. I will treasure the memories we had.

    Larry was an amazing man. regardless his struggles, he always had a smile on his face and the best laugh around. He is missed. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

    I’m so glad that you and Larry made your trips to Augusta and we got to see a visit him and to get to know you, Phylis that man loved the hell out of you, you two were such a great couple!!

    Larry was absolutely amazing! He was kind, generous and funny! My heart aches for you and Connor. So many fun memories to cherish. Larry’s wit, smile and laughter will never be forgotten by anyone who had the pleasure and honor of knowing him.     Phylis, Dan and I wish to express our deep sympathy and pray you and Connor are at rest with the passing of Larry. You had so much love every time I asked how he was doing? He now is at peace and I know missing him is heart breaking. Hope to see you soon and sure wish I could give you a hug!!

    With deepest sympathy to Phyllis, Sunshine, Connor, Lila, Ryan, Dixie and to Larry’s sisters and brothers to hear Larry passed away on July 16, 2020. We had the pleasure of meeting you all for the first time when we visited Helena to attend Betty’s 90th birthday. We also were invited to Larry and Phylis’s home for an enjoyable evening of fun and laughter.
