Lavonne Simac Hohn (Mugsy, Pug Mahone, Grandma Verdi, Grandma), 77, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer at home with family at her side on December 11, 2016.
She was born on January 30, 1939 to Clara and Russell Brown in Beach, North Dakota. She grew up in Sentinel Butte, North Dakota with 4 brothers, Wayne, Larry, Allen, Jim and 1 sister, Shirley Ann. She graduated from High School in Beach ND.
Shortly after high school, she met and married John Simac. John was building highways across Montana so they moved around frequently before settling in East Helena in 1968. Lavonne had her hands full with the farm and 5 (well behaved) children. After the kids were grown, Lavonne and John’s lives took separate paths, but remained good friends throughout her life. She later married Bill Hohn and they enjoyed life together until his passing last year.
She tried several occupations after the kids were grown and was a very successful at every endeavor. She was a flagger for highway construction, worked for Fish, Wildlife, and Parks as the Caretaker at Spring Meadow Lake, and then assumed her final position as the Manager (she thought she was the Owner) of Jackson Creek Saloon. This is where she became affectionately known as “Grandma” and began the Christmas for Kids Auction that benefited local youth for years. Her generosity was well known and felt by all who knew her.
After the tragic loss of her oldest daughter, Donna, she became a pioneer for victim’s rights in Montana. She testified for victim’s rights in several Legislative sessions. She traveled the state and did numerous talks to the pre-release center/boot camp inmates on how crime impacts not only victims, but their loved ones as well. She was one of the strongest people that you could ever meet.
She enjoyed travelling, spending time with her family, snuggling with her 4 legged companion, Rudy, and watching her game shows. She was even known to frequent a casino from time to time.
Lavonne was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Wayne and Larry; her sister Shirley Ann; her daughter, Donna Meagher; her son, Darwin Simac; and her granddaughter Keely Mulcahy.
Lavonne is survived by three children: David Simac and his wife Chris, Dennis Simac and his wife Teresa, Debbie Mulcahy and her husband Mark; son-in-law Karl Meagher; 15 grandchildren, Ashley (Todd) Bachmeier; Whitney Simac and her fiancé Aaron, Dylan Simac, Rachelle (Mike) Wagner, Janelle Meagher (Troy); Dustin Simac, Dalton Simac, Nicole Simac, Chelsea (Randy) Roberts, Tyson Simac, Karlee Simac, Paxson Simac, Kasey Mulcahy, Katelyn Mulcahy, and Kyle Mulcahy; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Jim and Allen, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at noon with the family to receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 15th at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, 3750 N. Montana Ave. A continued celebration of Lavonne’s life will begin at 6:00 p.m. at Chubbys Bar and Grill in Clancy.
