Lila Virostko, age 88, of Helena

Lila (Hakola) Virostko, 88, of Helena, passed away from natural causes on August 4, 2013.

Lila was born November 29, 1924, in Sand Coulee, Montana to Matti and Hilma (Sinko) Hakola, she was the twelfth of fifteen children.  Lila grew up in Sand Coulee, graduating from Stockett-Sand Coulee High School in 1942.  Upon graduation she worked in the Sand Coulee post office while taking correspondence courses from the Catholic “College of Education”.  She taught in a small country school in Evans, Montana for a couple of years during World War II.

Lila married Anthony (Tony) Virostko on September 4, 1948 in Great Falls.  They moved to Helena in 1951, Lila was a homemaker and mother of four children.  She volunteered at the schools, as an election judge, and she was active with the various PTAs.  Lila loved working with young children.  She was active with the Brownies and Girl Scouts while her girls were younger.  It was not uncommon during cookie sales to find her kitchen full of Girl Scout cookie boxes.  Once the kids were grown, Lila joined Tony in bowling and bowled with the Helena seniors league.

Lila is survived by her son Ed Virostko of Helena, daughters Marjorie (John) Peterson of Libby, Alice (Donald) Trinka of Bremerton, WA, Peggy (Michael) Flood of Loveland, CO, eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.  She is survived by her brother, Eddy Hakola of Sand Coulee and sister-in-law Frances Feller of Great Falls.

Lila is preceded in death by her husband Anthony (Tony) Virostko, her parents, Matti and Hilma (Sinko) Hakola, brothers and sisters Nelma Zakarison, Richard Ranta, Lillian Partlow, Tinie Kelly, Hilja Gemoll, Victor Hakola, Eugene Hakola, Gertrude Robison, Leona Agman, Matti Hakola, twin brother Donald Hakola, John Hakola and Eileen Dreher.

Lila had a passion for life; she was a generous mother and loved to be surrounded by her family and friends.  She lived in Montana her entire life.

The family will receive friends starting at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 12, 2013 at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, 3750 N. Montana Ave.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 12, 2013 at the funeral home.  A reception will follow the funeral service in the social hall of the funeral home with burial to take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison.  Memorials in Lila’s name may be sent to the charity of your choice.
