Logan Barnard Cain, from Helena, MT, passed away Friday, May 10, 2024 in Seattle, Washington after a 10 year battle with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), an autoimmune liver disease.
Logan was born in Houston, Texas on December 3, 1992. He was joined by his brother, Ryan, 16 months later. As little boys, the two of them were mischievous and funny. The family moved from Houston to Helena in 2000. Logan was an excellent student and graduated from Capital High School with honors.
Logan enjoyed playing baseball, skiing, camping and spending time with his friends playing both board and video games. He had a very special experience playing baseball in Europe as part of the People-to-People program. He played Little League, then Babe Ruth baseball until he was 16 and always had fun with his teammates. He was also a member of the Great Divide Ski Team.
Logan graduated from the Honors College at Montana State University (MSU) with a bachelor’s degree in Earth Sciences in 2016. During his college years he spent a semester at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.
During his junior year at MSU in 2015, his life changed forever when he was diagnosed with PSC. None of us fully understood what was in store for him over the next 10 years.
Logan received the gift of a liver transplant in March 2018. His family is forever grateful for the donor and family for giving Logan these extra years of life.
Logan used this extra time to carry on with his life by working for the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation as a geographical information systems professional for the sage grouse conservation program. He was able to continue working through many bouts of illness and hospitalizations. The family gives heartfelt thanks to his supervisors and co-workers for their willingness to work with him through all his health challenges.
There are no words that can convey the appreciation the family has for his caregivers – doctors and specialists, the hospital staff, and especially the nurses who attended to him during his hospital stays. These people worked tirelessly to treat him with respect, care for him with loving kindness and ease his way while attending to his medical needs.
Logan is survived by his mother Bonnie Barnard and father Daryl Cain; brother Ryan Cain; maternal uncle Jim Barnard and maternal aunt Alicia Barnard; paternal uncles, Byron Cain (Donna) and Ron Erickson (Susen deceased); and numerous other family and friends from around the world. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the other PSC warriors who have supported Logan and his family through this journey, most notably Annette and Bruce Kennedy who have been there from the start in 2015. Annette was of great comfort to Bonnie and Daryl as Logan went through his last hospitalization and passing.
A Memorial Gathering will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 10, 2024 in the Social Hall of Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home with a lite lunch.

Do not stand
By my grave, and weep.
I am not there,
I do not sleep—
I am the thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints in snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle, autumn rain.
As you awake with morning’s hush,
I am the swift, up-flinging rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight,
I am the day transcending night.
Do not stand
By my grave, and cry—
I am not there,
I did not die.

Patti Grant says
For once words truly cannot be found in my brain to share how I am thinking. It sounds lame yet cannot know the impact from loss of a child. I love you Bonnie, and still hope to watch you at an Open Mic Nite doing stand-up. Logan will have your back for sure and most likely his life will provide some materials from your vast store of family memories. Do they log roll in heaven? Your Mom can let Logan know. With deep love and warmth to you and yours, Patti OX
