In Memory Of

Louise Jane Greene

April 13, 1919 – December 26, 2010

Louise J. (Oxe) Greene was born on April 13, 1919 in St Paul, Minnesota to Edward J. and Bessie Fuller Oxe. She was the beloved wife of Charlie Greene and loving mother of Sheryn Hara and Gayle (Steward/Kaiser) (Pat) Astore.

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy: Chad (Sarah) Steward, Jennifer (Chris) Hara, Todd Hara and Stephanie Hara; Colter Steward and Dylan Steward. Louise loved spending time with them and sharing their lives.

Life for Louise started out as a 2lb, 2oz baby. The cook-stove oven was her incubator. She attended schools in St Paul, MN; Aurora, IL and Great Falls, MT where she graduated from high school in 1937. In June of 1941, she received a degree in Business Education from Montana State College in Bozeman, MT.

On April Fools Day in 1941, Louise met the love of her life Charlie Greene. They were married on December 20, 1941 in Dillon, MT. It was forty below zero that day. They spent the next several months at different military posts in Texas, Oregon and Colorado. When Charlie was sent to England during WWII, Louise stayed in Great Falls with her parents and was a substitute teacher around Great Falls, including Stockett, Sand Coulee. She also taught at Clyde Park.

After the war, Louise and Charlie bought a ranch in Augusta, where they lived for ten years. They then moved their young family to Bozeman, where she worked for MSC while Charlie attended college. There she typed 300 Master’s theses and Doctoral dissertations, sometimes typing all night. She also taped a Firefighter Manual for her grandson Todd, who is dyslexic. She taught at Belgrade from 1960-1965 where she was also a pep club sponsor. She has kept in touch with several of her students. She also taught at the Business College and Hellgate High in Missoula.

Louise was an active participant in life. She enjoyed helping others, traveling and being a good friend. What she considered a trip of a lifetime, was a ten week visit to Germany with her cousin. They enjoyed visiting with relatives as well as sightseeing. Louise kept in touch with her friends from grade school and high school. She also enjoyed the companionship of the members of the Fortnightly Book Club. Mental Health of Montana, St Peter’s Hospital and William G Sternhagen’s Law Office benefitted from her assistance as a volunteer. She was a member of the East Helena United Methodist Church.

During her time in the Order of the Eastern Star (55 years), she once served as a Past Worthy Matron. She was also a member of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem (25 years), where she once served as a Past Worthy High Priestess of White Shrine. Louise was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile and Grand Secretary for Job’s Daughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Henrietta Oxe and beloved cousins, Carl Oxe and Walt Oxe Jr. Cousins Barb and Gene Oxe survive.

Louise’s family would like to thank all the staff of Aspen Gardens and Pastor Dave Grieb. They appreciate the quality care given to her during the last five years. Louise will be missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, Louise requested donations be sent to: Algeria Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 1174, Helena, MT 59624 and Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, 911 W. 5th Ave., Spokane, WA 99204.

The family will receive friends between the hours of 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the Anderson Stevenson Wilke Chapel. Interment will follow at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery, Fort Harrison, Montana. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.aswfuneralhome.com.

    Dear Gayle, Bunny and families,

I am sorry for your loss of Louise. She will be missed by all of us. I was talking with my husband about how much positive impact your mother had on my life. Everything I learned from her I still use every day of my life. I don’t think there is any greater tribute to a teacher than that. I am so thankful for all the times I was able to enjoy with Louise, from being her student, working with her in Job’s Daughters, laughing with her at all her birthday parites and being her friend. We all have such loving and fun memories of her. May the memories you have be with you every day. There is such joy for her now being face to face with Jesus! May God give you all strength and peace.
    Love,
    Alison
