Lt. Col. Frank “Dwight” Neill Jr. (USAF), age 82, passed away on April 16, 2017 surrounded by his loving family at the Palmer Veterans and Pioneer Home in Palmer, Alaska.
Dwight was born on September 9, 1934 in Helena, MT to Frank Sr. and Josephine (Kier) Neill.
He graduated from Montana State University, Bozeman, with a BA in Engineering. He served 21 years in the US Airforce as a pilot. While serving in Vietnam he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After moving to Alaska in 1973 he retired from the Airforce and became an engineer for the State of Alaska.
Dwight was active in many organizations including the VFW, Civil Air Patrol, Anchorage Snowmobile Club, Knik Canoers and Kayakers Club, the Iditarod and the Star Group. In 2000, he participated in the Iron Dog Snowmachine Race, where he and his son took second place in the Trail Class Division. In his many travels he enjoyed rafting in South America, skiing in Europe, hiking in Asia, bridge climbing in Australia and numerous other adventures throughout the world.
He is preceded in death by his wife Janis C. Neill. He is survived by his brother Arthur K. Neill and his children Sharol, son-in-law John Hamp, Daniel and daughter-in-law Kimberly Neill, his 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Dwight will be interred at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery located at Fort William Henry Harrison in Helena, Montana with full military honors with Graveside services on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 3:00pm.
