Lucille L. Hinman Samson passed on Saturday, January 31 twelve days after the passing of the love of her life, husband, Bill. Her first date with Dad, at age 15, was a movie at the Marlow Theater and an ice cream cone at the Parrot. He was her love, he was her life and twelve days separation proved to be too much.
She was born on July 17, 1931 to Edna (McCreanor) Hinman and Dewey Morgan Hinman. She and sister, Suzanne, descended from grandparents William and Margaret McCreanor who homesteaded in York.
Mom graduated from Helena High School in 1949, attended Montana State University and returned to Helena to marry her high school sweetheart, Bill Samson. They welcomed children Shelley, Julie and David. Mom and Dad celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in August. She was a devoted wife and mother and supported the career of her husband in Helena, Great Falls and Billings before returning to Helena to begin retirement.
Mom participated in Bible study and church choir at Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Great Falls. She was active in the Great Falls Ad Club, was secretary for the CM Russell Art Auction and a Campfire Girl leader. She and Dad were instrumental in creating Camp Tawagenao on Salmon Lake for Campfire Girls to enjoy for many years. Mom loved spending time at the family cabin in Lincoln and opening the doors to the Swan Lake cabin for any and all to enjoy. Everyone was always welcomed at the dinner table.
Mom devoted years of service to the memorial committee at the First Presbyterian Church where she was an active member for 70 years. She always had a craft project underway and enjoyed quilting club with longtime friends. Her true passion was her grandchildren and great grandchildren. “Goggy” would put aside everything when they walked through the door.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Samson, and sister, Suzanne Bateman. She is survived children Shelley (Don) Pelc, Julie (Scot) Ferda, and David Samson. Her beloved grandchildren Brian, Brady and Bryson Pelc; Tucker, Taylor and Ashley Ferda and Elizabeth and Lauren Samson as well as great grandsons Cooper, Jackson, Anderson, and Bennett Pelc and first great granddaughter, Lucy Ferda, due in April.
A memorial service celebrating Lu’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 4th at First Presbyterian Church, 535 N. Ewing Street. A reception will preceed internment of ashes at Forestvale Cemetery next to her parents and the Veteran’s Cemetery at Fort Harrison with husband, Bill.

Gail Sieckman says
This is a lovely eulogy. Condolences on the loss of both your parents in such a short time, Shelley and siblings. I am sorry to hear of so much loss visiting your lives in such a short time. This must be a testament to the connection your parents enjoyed through their many years. But it makes it no less difficult to endure the losses for all of you.
Sincerely, Gail M. Sieckman

We are keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers—cannot imagine the emotions you are dealing with. I know your folks are happy together again—probably looking forward to the warm summer days in the Flathead/Swan area! Loved seeing all of you last week—stay strong and take care.

Dear Shelly, Julie, Dave and family,
We are so sorry for you loss. We were so glad that we were able to visit with her 2 weeks ago. The way she handled herself, in such a difficult situation, said so much about her. Your mother was such a wonderful person.
We are sorry we will not be able to attend the services as we are currently out of state.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and each of your families.

David and Family– I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your father, and now your mother. I wasn’t able to attend your father’s funeral, but I always had a great respect for him, as I know others did also. Your mother and father were a terrific pair. They were always, kind, generous, and thoughtful, even if they didn’t know somebody very well. Most importantly, both your mother and father were very special and classy people. You have my sympathy at a time like this, but at least you know that they are together again. Ron
Jane Seely Solberg says
Lu is most happy to be with Bill now as she has been for these many years. She’s probably eating dessert first–that’s what she always told me to do. Prayers have been said for both of them at my little church in the woods here in Whitefish.
John Seely says
Dear Shelly, Julie and David,
Like your Dad, your Mom was a very special person who found great comfort in her marriage, her family and her faith. I remember that one of her afternoon pastimes on the beach at Glenwood was playing Scrabble and she was tough to beat. I would always learn a word or two from her. We will keep them both in our thoughts and prayers and take comfort knowing that they are again together.
