Lyman Harry “Smitty” Smith
May 25, 1938 / December 16, 2018
Lyman was born May 25, 1938 to Reid and Olga {Rusch} Smith in the Dry Creek area north of Belgrade Mt. He attended the Dry Creek school for 1st grade and Manhattan schools thereafter until graduation.
Lyman worked for Gallatin Farmers COOP in Bozeman before starting Miracle Gas on his own. Later he went to California and started setting up mobile homes. He eventually returned to Montana and set up homes for Jerry Jones in Libby while the dam was being built. He then moved to Billings for short time and then returned to Bozeman and worked for Premier Homes setting up homes. In 1985 he started Smiths Home Repair and worked there until he retired.
Lyman enjoyed being and member of the Masonic brotherhood. He was a member of Manhattan Lodge #59 & Worthy Patron and Associated Patron for Eastern Star Sweet Brier #49 O.E.C. chapter. He was also Associate grand Guardian of Jobs Daughters for the state of Montana.
Lyman loved working with wood, he could make just about anything. He would help anyone in need, he was “that” guy who was up working all night at 30 below zero so your heating was working. He cared for many people and didn’t accept payment {except chickens and beef for trade} or whatever you could afford. He enjoyed fishing and snowmobiling. He was a great person, husband, father and brother. We will miss him so much.
Upon testing for a cochlear implant, it was discovered he had bladder and lung cancer, after surgery he was free and clear of cancer, but he lost his vision to Macular degeneration. Being deaf and blind was a terrible blow for Lyman, upon which dementia also crept in and took this wonderful person away from us.
Lyman is survived by his Wife Billie Ann Smith; his sisters: Alice Perry, Margaret Chaney and Joyce Dick; his 6 children: Sherrie Madden, Carol Simonson, Bob Johnson, Carrie Whitman, Wendy Huelett, and Cory Smith; 3 Step children: Bill Carpenter, Beth Diteman, and Kay Fox. He has many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great greats. Many, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brother, Bobby Smith; daughter, Tammy Smith; mother and father Reid and Olga Smith; brothers, Albert & Frank Smith; sister, Elizabeth; granddaughter, Ashley Diteman; niece, Tina Emery; and grandson, Jace Johnson.
A warm heartfelt thank you to all who cared for Lyman, Billie Ann Smith, Bozeman Detention Center, Montana State Mental Hospital, Elkhorn Health & Rehab, and St Pete’s Hospice.
