Marjorie Abell Sternberg, 92, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013 in Helena from injuries sustained from a fall.
Marjorie was born in East Helena, Montana to Charles Kingsley Abell and Josephine Elizabeth Sanders Abell on June 23, 1921. She was the youngest of her six siblings. She attended Spokane Creek School through the seventh grade. At 13, she contacted polio and was treated in Billings and attended the St. Vincent Hospital School. At 15, she returned to Helena and graduated from Helena High in 1940. She met the love of her life and married Alfred Sternberg on September 21, 1940.
During the war years, she lived in Spokane, Washington while her husband served in the Army Air Corp. After the war, they returned to Helena to work and raise their family. Marjorie worked for Clover Leaf Dairy as a bookkeeper and retired in 1984. After retirement, she and her husband travelled in their fifth wheeler and enjoyed the company of the Good Sam Club. Marjorie especially enjoyed playing pinochle at the Senior Center and made many friends with that group. She was an active member of the First Lutheran Church.
Marjorie is survived by her son, Stan Sternberg (Debbie) and her son-in-law Jack Maier; four grandsons: Jay Maier (Nancy), Jerry Maier (Tina), Kyle Sternberg and Brad Sternberg (Allison); and four great-granddaughters: Savannah and Sydney Maier and Charlotte and Adalyn Maier. She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred, her daughter Myrna Maier, her parents and her brothers and sisters: Harriet Tucker, Ivan Abell, Stella Jordan, Miva Van Engen, Esther Lay and Archie Abell.

I grew up in Helena and All and Marge were best friends with my parents Dale and Edna Phillips. After I married in 1976 I lost touch with The Sternbergs, but I have many fond memories of card games they had together and Marge was so sweet and had a great sense of humor…their family meant alot to mine…I was thinking of them tonight and found out they had passed…I send my best Stan..to you and your family..I miss those times back in Helena in the 60’s and 70’s..and miss Al and Marge…
