In Memory Of

Martha J. Johnston, age 97 of Helena

July 25, 1918 – October 17, 2015

Martha Jane Johnston was born July 25, 1918 in Hagerman, Idaho, to George and Pearl (Albertson) Scarlett. She left this world in peace on October 17, 2015, at the age of 97.

Martha grew up in Idaho, living in a variety of communities before the family settled in Pocatello. She attended Idaho State University, majoring in phlebotomy. While attending ISU she met the love of her life, Kenneth Leo Johnston. They married in 1939 and she took on the task of homemaker and mother.  Over the course of their marriage, Martha and Ken and the family moved many times as Ken pursued his occupation as a chemist working for a major oil company. They lived in Idaho, Utah, and Oklahoma and eventually settled in Montana. Originally living in Great Falls, then in Avon, and finally settling in her dream home along the creek in York, where they lived for 25+ years before moving to the Touchmark in 2005.

Martha loved Montana, the mountains and especially wildflowers. So much so that she started her own business carefully drying and pressing wildflowers into pictures; gently preserving and appreciating each flower for it’s individual beauty. The Wildflower Place provided unique and lovingly preserved mementos of Montana to many.  Martha also loved to garden, an occupation that began with a Victory Garden during the war and continued her whole life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny, her parents and two brothers,  son, Philip; son-in-law, Bob, and two grandchildren John Backus and Jenny Davis.

Martha is survived by her children Kathleen (Dan) Robinson, Sallie (Gary) Clinard, Judy Simpson, Kenny (Linda) Johnston, and daughter-in-law, Ann Johnston, 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and her special friend Toni Schneider.

Martha had many friends and a large family; and loved people of all kinds and from all walks of life.  She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.  Services will be held at the York Community Center on Thursday, October 22nd at 11:00 AM. Please visit below to offer the family a condolence or to share a memory of Martha.
