Mary J. Gailushas passed away August 12, with family members at her side. Mary was born September 23, 1919 in Kearney, New Jersey to Caesar Bubenas and Josephine Smolsky Bubenas. She married Albert Gailushas in 1939 in her hometown of Garwood, New Jersey. Both Mary and her husband Albert’s parents emigrated from Lithuania to Ellis Island in the early 1900s.
Mary worked in a factory during WWII and later as a waitress in New Jersey. She and Albert moved to Helena in 1955 and owned and operated several restaurants. After Albert’s passing, Mary retired from the State of Montana in 1985. Mary then went to work for J.C. Penney until her second retirement in 1995.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Albert; daughter Katherine Chovanak; granddaughter Patricia Chovanak; brother Stanley Bubenas; and sister, Stella Reider. She is survived by her daughters Patricia (John) Verbanac, Rosemarie (Daniel-deceased) Pouliot, and Theresa (Melissa) Gailushas; her son Bert Gailushas; and her grandchildren John Verbanac, Joseph (Chris) Verbanac, Lisa (Richard) Dukes, Robert Pouliot, Michael (Anastasia) Pouliot, Angela (Chris) Pettybone, Kathleen Chovanak, Shane (Tina) Gailushas, Jeremy Gailushas, Nicholas (Marta) Gailushas, Matthew Gailushas, Chantelle Gailushas; 21 great-grandchildren; and 2 great great –grandchildren.
A Vigil will be held at Saint Mary’s Catholic Community on Thursday Sept 21st at 4 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Mary’s Catholic Community on Friday Sept 22nd at 2 PM with interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. A reception will be held at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home.
