Matthew “Matt” J. Lightbody, age 36 of Helena

November 26, 1978 – October 31, 2015

Matthew Jay Lightbody died in a car accident Saturday morning Oct. 31, 2015. We are missing his sassy wit, flirtatious smile & stubborn nature already.

Matt was born to Jay & Teresa Lightbody on November 26, 1978. Being a bit competitive in nature he was 14 minutes ahead of his brother, Andrew.   He let the world know he arrived.

Matt attended schools in E. Helena & Helena graduating from HHS in 1997. He attended the University of Montana graduating with a BA in Business administration.

After college Matt worked for the construction division of Northwind Inc. in Idaho for several years. In 2009 he returned to Helena and worked a variety of construction positions most recently working for Elkhorn Insulation in Townsend.

He was happy “fixin stuff” and hated when he had to pay someone else to fix something…Especially if it is on his truck.

Like previous generations in Matt’s family, he loved baseball. He and his brother spent many summers as toddlers on the softball fields watching dad play and he couldn’t wait until he was the one on the field one day. All of his boyhood summers were spent playing baseball. When he was 15 he was one of the Helena players that got to travel to Japan to spend 2 weeks playing baseball against Japanese teams. He was a loyal New York Yankee fan his whole life. He loved a game of golf (when he was playing well) and enjoyed beating his Grandpa Don in cribbage (for money of course).

Matt always spent fall bird hunting with his late Grandpa Bob, Uncle Mike, his dad & brother. Fall was his favorite time of year. He loved spending time in Dutton at their “red shed” living quarters, eating breakfast at the local café, watching a football game at the bar and getting the morning and evening hunts in between. It was at this special place where he ultimately lost his life but was so happy to be there this past weekend doing what he loved most.

Then there is the lake. Matt loved hanging out at the cabin at Canyon Ferry. He would terrorize his Mom having to drive the jet skis fast & crazy and she would terrorize him back telling him they were just for driving around the lake drinking coffee and looking at people’s yards. He loved a big campfire on the beach and being the first one in the lake each year – a competitive run he has going with his dad & brother.

Matt’s bulldog, Bear, who ultimately became the family bulldog, was a special part of Matt’s life. Bear attended college with Matt and got his own education living with bachelors. The family can’t help but find a little comfort thinking Matt & Bear may be a team again.

Matt didn’t like a lot of fuss about anything. Simple was always best for him. He didn’t want attention, he didn’t like the limelight and he would be shaking his head over all this fuss about him.

Matt is preceded in death by Grandpa Bob Lightbody and his baby nephew Captain Lightbody.

Matt is survived by his mom and dad, twin brother Andy & sister-in-law Amy of Sandpoint, Idaho, grandparents Don & Jan Redmond, Grandmother Pat Lightbody,

Aunts & uncles Larry & Debbie Redmond, Kevin & Terry Redmond, Pat Redmond, Mike Lightbody, Lynn & Mark Keller, cousins; Chris (Kevin) Dunn, Sam (Taryn) Redmond, Erin Redmond, Chase Redmond, Mallory Redmond, Lindsay Redmond, Kayla (Paul) Thronson, Kelsey Redmond, Kevin P. A vigil will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5th at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home, 3750 N. Montana Ave. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. Friday, November 6th at the Cathedral of St. Helena, 530 N. Ewing St. A reception will follow the Mass at Jorgenson’s Inn and Suites, 1714 11th Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Matt’s name to the American Legion Baseball, PO Box 6075 Helena, MT 59624.

  181. Last time I saw Matt I had just dropped my wallet . Papers blowing around coins rolling around . “Mizzzz Bannon, whatt’d you do here? ” so he helped me gather my stuff , made a quiet comment about my husbands Reds and off he went. I just liked that kid so much ! Only knew him for 5 years or so but he was so nice to me and loved talking baseball .. I just loved that . My condolences to his family and friends … What a special human being. Feeling sad for everyone.

    My name is Doug Bunnell, and I know I can speak for both Derek and myself in letting you all know it was an honor to be friends with your son/nephew/grandson Matt. Our hearts are heavy with his passing, but we’re better people for having shared time with Matt. Matt taught me many things and always made me laugh. Two that I want to point out and share with you are;;
    Matt was a truly loyal friend. He didn’t hand out his friendship and rarely mixed his words. When you were his friend, you earned it . Secondly, as many others ,eloquently stated, was his pure and true humility. Derek & I will miss Matt tremendously. Love you Matty

  198. I remember when Matty first got Bear. Matt and I happened to bring our pups to the vet on the same day while we were living in Missoula. It was shortly after my son Avery was born (14 years ago). Matt, Andy and I go way back to grade school and attended college together. I guess growing up with someone, you do not realize the brother/sisterhood you have until much later in life. I remember Matt’s adoration for little baby Avery. He told me Avery was the “best looking baby he ever saw.” I also remember how much he loved that bulldog. Andy was a dear friend during my pregnancy also. I’m grateful for your children… And am thankful I have a long list of memories with them.
    Matt had a way about him… Always a handsome smile. I remember our middle school days hanging out after school and meeting up on the weekends. Many fond childhood memories from grade school, middle school, high school, then college with your boys. My heart aches for you during this time of loss. Matt will no doubt stay in our hearts and memories until we see him again in heaven. I apologize for being unable to attend his funeral, as Cory was preparing for deployment that same month, and we are living in NY. I hope to give you a big hug when I come through Helena.
    Congrats on your grandson on the way… What a precious gift from our Lord.
