For as many times as I “visited” him in his office, I think he told my parents about only half of them,, and I wasn’t there voluntarily! He was understanding and willing to give second chances,,,,,, and third and fourth,,, he was awesome. My condolences to the family, you have lost a GREAT MAN!

Judy,
I had the privilege of living by, working with, and riding along side Mike when I was growing up in the Helena Valley. Mike introduced me to the world of horses and let me tag along to every roping I could, when I wasn’t playing sports. I am glad to have many memories of Mike and I wanted to share one of my favorite with you. When I was in high school he offered me a job outside of Lincoln on a ranch he rode for after he retired. That summer we spent our time riding and listening to Louis L”Amour books on tape. We perfected our shot with a .22 and rode every inch of that ranch on some of the prettiest property I have seen. It was the best job I ever had. Mike had a tremendously positive influence on my life, he was like a grandfather to me and I will always be grateful for the time I had with him and how much we laughed, and what he taught me and what he gave me through riding horses.
Kelly Dimick says
I am so sorry for your loss!! May God wrap his arms around you all and comfort you.
Mr. Murphy was a great man. My freshman and sophomore yrs at Capitall High were not very productive and I visited with Mr. Murphy a few times discussing me dropping out of school and he kept telling me that I couldn’t!! He must of had more faith in me than I did at the time. I’ve since gone on to college and got my degree. That wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for his guidance and belief in me. Thank you Mr. Murphy!!!
Clark Cleveland says

Jeannette Garay Manning says
To the Murphy Family et al,
What a perfectly beautiful day for a Butte boy named Murphy to leave.; St. Patrick’s day! Mr. Murphy was certainly a force in my much needed discipline in 1985. I will forever have a huge debt of gratitude to him and to you his loving family who shared him with us so freely. I had some good years as an educator that I credit to him and all in the Helena School District who touched my life. I got to return to CHS and apologize to him for the many antics that caused much ruckus. He was ever the professional, and getting to laugh with him while the kids in the hall still revered him was an experience I will never forget. I am sad that he left but, I am so happy to hear of the legacy he left beyond family. We the students who both feared and loved him will now cherish him. Praying for your peace now…
Jeff Coleman says
I’m saddened by the news of Mr. Murphy’s passing, but to this day touched by my family’s intersection in time with him. From venison for the freezer, to a working mower, to some “encouragement” to maintain the straight and narrow, Mr. Murphy went way out of his way to help a single mom and her 2 young boys. I will forever hear his booming voice in my head: “Mr. Coleman, please take that hat off in the building!” Hope God allows lids in heaven! Rest in peace.
Dan Dallas says
Sad to hear of Mike’s passing. Great man and enjoyed the banter back and forth with him. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.
Chance & Staci Ferlicka says
Judy and family,
Mike was a wonderful person. We both had the opportunity to “visit” with him as students & adults. Although he liked to act “tuff” he really was a softy. When we think of him he brings a smile to our face. Spike was a true bruin and good friend. We will miss him. Sending hugs and prayers to you all.
Molly Johnson Kaufman says
Murph was such a fixture in all of our lives for so many years. We didn’t always agree, but we always respected him, and he always gave us the respect that we deserved. I remember well the rough voice, but gentle hand in the hall ways of Capital, the big smile, and great laugh that filled our days. I wasn’t usually in his office for getting into trouble, but when I was, he listened to me, went below the surface to find the real reason, and gave solid advice. Mike encourage success in every student he came into contact with, and was proud of each accomplishment we made. Rest in Peace, Mr. Murphy. Your legacy lives on in the many, many lives you have touched, affected, encouraged, and allowed to fly away.
Glenn M. Donaghy says
Mr. Murphy is a super human being. I had the pleasure of having another disciplinarian, much the same as Murph, overseeing my development in college. I am sure the two are sitting down in Heaven comparing notes on the many escapades they suspect I was involved. Vio con Dios Murph

Judy and family, As you know Mike was a great person is so many ways. He was my principle in high school and I got in a lot of trouble so I was scared to death of him. But later in life I met the true Mike. It was such a great man and mentor for so many. I didn’t get the chance to work with him at the 888 but I worked there later and saw all the hard work and care he put into it and his bird house hanging there still. I have bought several of his bird houses and have some hung in the trees here in Arizona, he will be missed by all and the birds too they thank him for all the great houses. RIP Mike you deserve it. My prayers are with the family God bless you all

Please accept my sincere applogize of your loss. Mr. Murphy will always hold a special place in my heart. He and I had a long standing debate on having a Homecoming celebration at Capital High School. It wasn’t until after high school that I got to see the other side of Mr. Murphy a true teddy bear. A year and half ago he came to the Lamb Family Reunion at the Little Red School House with a truck filled with bird houses and I bought one. I look at everyday through my kitchen window and think about him.
Robyn VanHemelryck says
We are so sorry to hear about Mr. Murphy! I was lucky to know him both while attending CHS and also as an adult. Although he was tough on a lot of students at CHS that is what made us all better adults. He was always so friendly whenever he came in to Smitty’s and was always trying to sell me another birdhouse for my Mom. She loved them and still displays them proudly. It was fun to see him at the Bruin games and always had a great sense of humor! He will be greatly missed but I feel lucky to have known him! Your family is in our thoughts and prayers!

The next time he saw me he gave me a picture he took of my mom and classmates on a senior trip. I’m very happy to have it and have shared it with one of their classmates since. Thank you for keeping me on the straight and narrow and helping me get through school!!

Connie (Sands) Jerome says
We would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the family. I was a 1977 Graduate of Capital High, My husband a 1973 graduate of Helena High – Mike was a diligent man in keeping peace and restoring order, in the past 10 years we had the chance to meet up and visit with him and he helped assist us in choosing a “stable” step ladder. We often think of him when we are using it. Even in his later years he still cared to keep people safe. He was a gem indeed. Our prayers of comfort to the family – Sincerely, Connie ( Sands) Jerome and Kelly Jerome
Goose and Jan Gregson says
Judy, Matt and Julie, please know that we are thinking of you all at this very tough time. Mike will always be remembered for his generous smile and ability to both scare you and make you laugh. I (Jan) have known him since I entered Helena High as a sophomore in 1973 . He was our “disciplinarian” there was just something about his shaved head, his athletic body and often stern face that truly made you “straighten” up. He was an “Oscar” winner in that role, giving so many of us the tools to “get it right” in life. Yet, the first time you saw his smile and heard him laugh, you saw his heart! Thank you Mr Murphy for your commitment to all of us! You and Jude, behave up there! We are sending you ,Judy, Matt and Julie our love and prayers. Goose and jan
Mary Anne McMahon says
Mrs. Murphy, Matt, and Julie, I want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers! Even though there were times that I was “scared” that “Mr. Murphy” was gonna kick all of our butts for doing something we shouldn’t have been doing, And yes, kicking our butts was probably the right thing for him to do, but unfortunately for Matt, he was the only one who had to go home to Murph! He not only helped us all grow up to be respectful and responsible, Mr Murphy also taught us to laugh and enjoy life! I loved the guy! He was the best! His laugh, and that smirky smile on his face are forever etched in my mind. I am so blessed to have known him! Treasure your memories of your husband and dad! I love you all!
Debbie Littell Dodge says
Oh how I loved Mr. Murphy!!! I had numerous encounters with him when I was in high school – mostly for me parking in “non-parking” spots coming back to school (running late) after lunch and creating parking spots close to the front in order to avoid a tardy. He would call me out of class, make me move my car and give me the tardy that I was trying to avoid
I would always try to argue my point and of course there was no point to my behavior. Despite that, he always treated me with love, respect, kindness and well deserved lecturing (with his great smirk)~ Love, love, love that man! My condolences to his lovely family. God Bless!
Dale Hause says
I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. Mike was always there to support and offer advice. He has touched so many. My condolences and prayers.
Charlie McCarthy says
Tough as nails, he could put the fear of God in the “toughest” kids or the guy knuckled down on the opposite side of the line. A real Western “Bulldog”. It was great talking with him about the days in Dillon, or his son the game warden, or the weather or ………..whatever. I’ve been missing him at Farmer’s Market, and now I know why. I just ran across this website today, July 1, and send my deep sympathy to the family.
Gretchen (Bird) Stenson says
It takes a very special man to be an authority figure for teenagers AND be so loved and respected! I lived to crack him up in highschool (’82) and felt brilliant when I could coax that wry grin! Mr. Murphy you were one-of-a-kind! Blessing to Matt, Julie and Mrs. Murphy. <3

Dan and I first knew “Mr. Murphy” when we were Helena High students in the late ’60’s. Later, after we both entered the teaching profession, we worked under him. Mike was a friendly employer, and did his job as Vice Principal at Capital High School very well! He was highly respected and always sought to do the right thing by his family, friends, fellow educators and teenage students. We will miss Mike. God bless his family and him.
