In Memory Of

Olaf T. ‘Ole’ Johnson, age 89 of Helena

August 23, 1926 – October 24, 2015

Olaf “Ole” T. Johnson 89, passed away in the loving arms of His Lord, Saturday, October 24, 2015, of natural causes.

He was born August 23rd, 1926 in Norway to Abelona & Olaf Johnson.  He was the sixth of seven children.    Early in his life, Ole migrated to America with his family and settle in the Three Forks-Bozeman area.  Due to his disabilities, Ole had many homes including Boulder River School, Davis & Tamarack group homes, and finally Sunset Capital Apartments. When he was in his 40’s he came to Helena and became a client of Spring Meadow Resources.    Ole spent much of his time mowing lawns and shoveling snow for his neighbors.   He loved helping people.

Ole was a local fixture in the downtown area. Ole knew everybody by name and they knew him.    He always looked forward to Sundays so that he could worship God.  At the First Lutheran Church he played Joseph for their yearly Christmas pageant.

Twenty- three years ago, Ole was invited to the home of Judy and Jerry Johnson. His life changed and so did theirs -for the better.   Ole became an important member of their family and he enjoyed many activities with them.  Fishing was first on the list.   It was always a contest to see who could catch the first fish.    He also enjoyed hunting, camping, Sunday dinners, and going on rides to Townsend for a piece of pie and coffee.

Ole will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his brother, Rader Johnson, his brother-in- law, Paul Schofield and many nieces and nephews.

Ole was preceded in death by his parents and his best buddy, Jerry Johnson, and his 5 siblings.

There will be a viewing on Wednesday, October 28th, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Retz Funeral Home, 315 E 6th Ave.

Ole’s life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 29th, 2015 at Retz Funeral Home with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Three Forks. The family would like to thank Big Sky Care Center, Spring Meadow Resources and everyone who enriched Ole’s life.

    Remembering Uncle Ole,
Ole loved fishing especially with his buddy, Joe McKay, who lived down the block from him & his Mom in Bozeman. He told some wild fishing stories and kept the family and his neighbors supplied with fresh trout. He made his own sinkers and kept my Dad (his brother, Anton) well supplied. I still fine Ole’s sinkers around the house.
Ole loved watching Charlie Chaplin and the 3 Stooges films with his old movie projector and screen. He watched them over and over and never failed to laugh.
Boy, could Ole fry hamburgers. When his Mom was away, he would have us over for hamburgers. I don’t know what he did to them but they were the best.
To earn extra money, Ole shoveled snow in the winter and mowed lawns in the summer.
He did an amazing job and after moving to Helena, he told us he mowed the Governor’s lawn.
He like to have a beer once in a while, even though he was not suppose to and he never turned down a meal. He loved cookies, coffee and visiting.
Above all, Ole loved his family. His face would light up every time he saw one of us.
He was a kind, gentle man. Ole will always be remembered.

i am thankful that I knew Ole. I can remember one time when i was out to lunch with him that he tole me in detail of going to Heaven. He told me where he would sit and Jesus would be on one side of him at the banquet table. He talked about how Jesus would pass him what ever kind of food he wanted.
Ole was a delight to be around. He would get a twinkle in his eyes when anyone he knew came around.
I am so glad to have known him.

Ole was always a joy to visit with. He used to visit my office a couple times per month when he was shopping at the Good Samaritan Thrift Store. He found out I served in the guard and was always after me to get him army boots. After several pairs, he seemed happy to just visit and show me he was wearing them. I will always cherish those visits. Hope you enjoy eternity visiting with old friends and of course the Lord!

We are sorry to learn of Ole’s passing, we have great memories of our time with him at the Presbyterian Church in Helena. Please know we are saying a “See you later” prayer for Ole, we know where he is and his family and friends will see him again soon.

Ole was a wonderful, kind man who loved people and thought the best of everyone he knew. There were no strangers to Ole. When we were small he would show us hours of Three Stooges movies. We would be propped up on his bed, giggling at the antics of the movies and delighting in Ole’s enjoyment too. We would get some of Grandma’s cookies for a movie break. I think Ole liked those cookies as much as he did the Three Stooges! Ole will be greeted in Heaven by Grandma, his brothers, sisters and friends. You were a special fellow Ole, and we hold your memory close to our hearts. God Bless you as he blessed us with you. We should take a page from your life Ole; believe in the goodness of others, work hard and be a good person. Your recipe for life was a keeper.

Ole came in to our lives walking his dog Foxy. He would stop by the house and we would chat about his job and how he loved to fish. So I was able to take him fishing on Canyon Ferry. But not before stopping by Friendly’s to pick up some provisions. He asked if he could sign up for an electric scooter. I said sure and to put my phone number on the slip. We had a fantastic day fishing. He kicked my butt and I caught a few. OH YEAH! I got a call from Friendly’s with his winning ticket. He was happier than I’ve ever seen him. Sitting on his newly won prize. We move a few blocks away and I would stop by and see him. We would take a spin in my Mustang GT Convertible. He loved it!!! His big smile will be missed.
