I was raised in Lincoln. I graduated from Carroll College in 1965 with Paul. I worked for the US Forest Service in Lincoln in the summers as station fireguard while going to college. Paul’s dad Don was the fire control officer. I worked with him for 4 summers. A great outdoorsman and I learned a lot from Don. I have not had contract with Paul in almost 50 years but a couple of years ago saw him at Barbara Garland’s restaurant. Enjoyed visiting with him and going over ole memories of fishing the Blackfoot. I fished the Blackfoot as a kid and waded the river in tennis shoes fly fishing in an unbelievable time. We tied our own flies. Also packed many times into the Scapegoat Wilderness. I read Paul’s impressive legacy as a teacher and conservationist. Took after his mother Maxine in teaching. Grateful to know Paul as a kid. Grateful to see what an impressive life of service he performed. Sorry to hear of his passing and wish all his family peace in knowing how much he contributed to others. With greatest sympathy for your loss.

He was the best teacher I ever had.

The epitome of a Montanan and a shoe-in for the Montana Hall of Fame. Paul was a teacher, a mentor, an employer, and a fishing and hunting buddy of mine and his passing is heartbreaking. Shannon and I send our sympathy, love and condolences to the family and will remember Paul as we cast a fly, run dogs and chase birds and hike along the Rocky Mountain front.

What a guy! You quickly learned that every rebound belonged to Paul. Thoughts and prayers to Paul’s family.

My husband bought a drift boat from Paul and we both shopped for years at Crossroads. Paul was always so generous with his fishing knowledge; he wanted everyone to enjoy Montana’s precious waters. I also had a personal connection with Paul through his conservation efforts. I was on the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Open Space bond and worked with the Lincoln community to the river access Paul spearheaded for them. Access to a public resource and safety were the primary drivers behind that wonderful project. Paul was always so self effacing that I had no idea of his myriad accomplishments until I read his wonderful obituary. We have celebrated several close friends who have been nominated to the Montana Outdoors Hall of Fame. It’s SO unfortunate that Paul was just weeks away from receiving this well-deserved award. Our deepest condolences to his family and the wonderful organizations that benefitted from his involvement. Connie and Dave Cole

Mr. Roos. I’ve known you since 1970, my fifth grade year. You were my teacher, my principal, and my freshman year basketball coach. All I can say is, Thank you for all you did for me!

I am so sorry to hear about Paul, or Mr. Roos, passing. He was my best friend’s dad and my favorite teacher.

Because of Paul, I went back to school and got my BA in Teaching with a focus in Mathematics. I never did get to tell him that. I can very clearly hear him saying, “you can’t mix apples and oranges” in class! He inspired me for sure.

I was always grateful to hang with the Roos family. We had lots of laughs and gallons of memories. My heart goes out to all of you. ❤

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Roos family. Though I did not know “Paul” that well, I knew his daughter Lee, and extended family in Billings. I admired all the work Paul did over the years in conservation endeavors and enjoyed getting to know him when he would visit family in Billings. May family and friends help each other during this time of grief.

Mr Roos was my physics teacher at Helena Central. He made a rigorous subject that could have been dry and tedious, interesting. I remember the extra effort he made to help
those who were having trouble. He had a kind and approachable way of interacting with all of his students and laid a sound foundation for those of us who took physics in college. When I think about the teachers who had a real impact on me, Mr Roos is on the top of the list.
Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I just heard the sad news about Paul, and I wish to extend my condolences to all of Paul’s extensive family and friends. Paul was two years younger than me, and our friendship extended beyond 50 years, first as a float client and then a friend in communication over these many years. Since I rarely miss a summer in Montana, we saw each other often. My wife and I were pioneer client floaters on the Smith with Paul, Kay and the daughter Kathy handling the freight raft. It was here we learned the value to freeze beef stroganoff in half gallon milk containers for ice. The original introduction to Paul came through Pat Barnes who recommended him to guide us on the Sun, Blackfoot and Missouri. While on several trips on the Smith, John Kowalski teamed with Paul, and, Oh My, no one could spin yarns like these two talented, keen fishermen. My connection with Paul went beyond Helena and Lincoln. During one of our stays at the E Bar L, I convinced Paul to join my wife and I on a pack trip to the headwaters of the South Fork of the Flathead and float out on my raft to the Hungry Horse Reservoir. Having to immediately portage around two fallen trees, Paul vowed never to do it again. But that adventure kicked off a long relationship between Paul and the E Bar L, where he eventually met Carolyn Laws. As I write, I feel a sense of nostalgia and the warm, countless memories with Paul. I cannot visit Montana or talk about fly fishing without Paul coming to mind. He was a very passionate man who walked the talk. I will miss him.

My condolences to the Roos family. I believe a “giant among us” has now departed. I have hardly ever seen one person who impacted so many people in so many different areas of life in a positive way as Paul. I didn’t realize quite how many and varied they were until reading the obituary.

My early memories came from the basketball court where we faced off many times in the Helena City league. I always tried not to be guarded by Paul because of his sharp elbows, fearless tenacity and strength. We also had the joy of watching together our daughter and the Roos daughters as they played basketball for Capital High School.

Finally I had the opportunity to see Paul and Bonnie at the Helena Airport a number of months back. It was a pleasure to meet Bonnie and of course at that time Paul was as exuberant and full of energy as ever. My prayers go out to the family for peace and strength in this time of deep loss.

Oh gosh! I am thinking of you all – Paula, Kathie, Shomai, Lee and families! Your dad was a wonderful man! I have so many wonderful memories of his encouraging words watching me play basketball, his laugh when I came to your house, his smile, and obvious love for all of you! Treasure every memory and live on the legacy that he set forth for you! My hugs and prayers to all of you! Mary Anne

My heart goes out to You Kathy, Bonnie, Ella Smith and the entire Roos family. I was only honored to have known Paul for a very short time. But in those last few months, I met a man with an energetic and witty sense of humor. His “Signature” on the Studio, ‘excavator oops’, makes me smile every time I think of it. What a wonderful legacy Paul left for the Blackfoot River, Lincoln and all of Montana. God Bless

My deepest condolences to Paul’s family. He was an absolutely amazing man, teacher and mentor. Almost every day I happily remember summers of my youth, when I was allowed to work as one of Paul’s guides. May his invaluable lessons and indomitable spirit continue to inspire and guide us

My deepest sympathies to the entire Roos family. I always enjoyed being neighbors with Paul and the Roos family for many years. Paul was a class act in whatever he did. Everyone who him liked and respected him. He will be miss by entire Montana community. I will miss seeing Paul at Lady Griz games in Missoula. All my best to all of the Roos family.

We were saddened by the news of Paul’s passing. He was such a leader in the environmental preservation efforts in Montana and the Blackfoot Challenge. He will be missed. My father was an avid fly fisherman from Cheyenne, Wyoming. He arranged a fishing trip to stay at the Roos fishing camp with 6 fishing friends. I was able to fish with Dad there and we were treated like kings. My father positively remembered that trip until he passed.
