Ramona Grace Weber passed away peacefully on Jan. 14, 2014. She was 91 years old. Ramona was born on Jan. 1, 1923 to Paul F. and Jeanette (Roos) Osos in Michigan City, Indiana. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic school through grade 10, then graduated from Isaac C. Stern High School in Michigan City.
Ramona met her husband Stephen Frederick Weber during WWII. They were married in Michigan City at St. Mary’s Church on June 26, 1943. During the war, they lived in Los Alamos, New Mexico where Stephen worked as a research chemist on the Manhattan Project. Following the war, they moved to Helena, Montana and eventually settled on a small farm in the Helena Valley.
Ramona was a life-long member of the Catholic Church, first at the Helena Cathedral and then at Our Lady of the Valley Parish. Ramona was a Eucharistic Minister and frequently brought the Eucharistic Sacrament to the Veterans Administration Hospital.
Ramona was devoted to her family. Over the years, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Girl Scout Leader, a 4-H leader and a 4-H Builders leader. She taught many young 4-H girls the art of clothing construction and fine tailoring. To the delight of her children, Ramona frequently baked fruit pies, cinnamon rolls and donuts. Each year she filled the root cellar with her home-canned fruits and vegetables. Ramona loved to travel and frequently visited her children in Germany, Tunisia, Togo, Washington State, Ontario, and Alaska.
Ramona was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, her sister Laverne Peters and brothers Paul and George Osos. She is survived by her youngest sister Frances LeCraw and brother-in-law Edward Peters. Ramona also is survived by her five children Jeanette (Gilles Roger) Evermann of Ottawa, Ontario, Stephen (Beverly) Weber of Helena, Kathleen Pruzan of Seattle, WA, Phyllis (Patrick) Scannell of Schodack Landing, NY and Betty (Mike) Evans of Helena. Her grandchildren include Nicolas and Natalie Evermann, Stephen and Anna Weber, Matthew Pruzan, Daniel, Luke and Garth Scannell, Amanda Cannon, Jylian Berry, Brian and Erik Evans. Ramona also had five great grandchildren.
A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Our Lady of the Valley Church, 1502 Shirley Rd, Helena. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 22, at Our Lady of the Valley Church, with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. A reception will immediately follow in the social hall at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Good Samaritan Ministries and Thrift Store, 3067 N. Montana, Helena, MT 59601.
