On the morning of October 7th, 2020, Oliver “Randy” Randall Carlson passed away in Helena MT, from natural causes. Randy was born on December 5th, 1946 in Great Falls, MT. He was the 6th child of Antony Victor and Anna Mae Carlson.
Randy Married Connie Faust on December 30th, 1967 at the St Gerard’s Catholic Church in Great Falls, MT. They were happily married for nearly 53 years. He served over 25 years in the Montana Air National Guard, he received he bachelor’s degree from the University of Montana in Social Studies teaching and Sociology and then went on to receive his master’s in administration. Randy was a long-time educator for the Helena school district #1. He started his teaching career in 1970 at Sunhaven high school. When Sunhaven transitioned to Capital High, Randy was a founding member of the faculty and staff. Continuing his career for 40 years as a Social studies teacher, Coach, Vice Principal and Principal, Randy touched thousands of lives in our community.
Randy was also a founding member of the Helena Optimists Club, and truly believed and lived by the Optimists Creed. “Promise yourself – To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievement of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large to worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
Randy loved spending time with his family, sports, golf, reading and learning. Randy lived a great life, he cared deeply for his family, and he loved another with all his heart and soul. Through both small and simple, as well as great acts of kindness, he showed the world how extraordinary he was.
Randy is survived by his wife, Connie Carlson of Helena; Daughter Kristin (Blake) Hall of Idaho, Son Brett (Krissy) Carlson also of Helena; Sister Neva (Larry) Passage of Helena, Brother Terry (Shirley) Carlson of Great Falls; and Grandchildren, Austin, Peyton, Carter, Jackson, Grace and Samantha. Randy and Connie have been special friends since 7th Grade at Paris Gibson Jr Hi. I was honored to stand with them as their ‘best man’ in a wedding that began a Lifelong partnership of love, trust, and unwavering support. Randy’s passion for commitment is demonstrated not only in his 53 year devotion to his family, but also in his nearly 50 years of tireless contribution to education, coaching, and mentoring kids and teachers. Randy and I joined the Montana Air National Guard together in 1969, serving over 25 years with his special talents. He was equally committed to his lifetime of friends throughout the state. Randy will be noticeably missed, but his honor and memory will always be engraved in our minds. Go in peace my amazing friend.

My heart and my prayers go out to you all. Randy was such a neat guy & I always thought the world of him. I know he’ll be terribly missed. Athletically gifted (among so many other things), he was never conceited or full of himself, just so very kind and caring to everyone. The Optimists Creed so well describes Randy. He truly lived and believed every principle of this caring, kind doctrine. Even as his health declined he still lived and verbalized only kind and caring thoughts – often given with a terrific sense of humor.
We feel very lucky to have been one of Randy’s many friends. Sending love and hugs to Randy’s family. He always spoke of all of you with love and positivity.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I don’t think anyone who knew Randy (Mr. Carlson) didn’t like him. When my high school sweetheart and I would smooch outside his classroom, he’d give us a bad time. That was about 35 years ago and our kids went to CHS! They were lucky enough to know Mr. Carlson too. Three of my grandkids have been part of Aunt Krissy and Uncle Brett’s house since birth. My heart is aching for you all. Randy Carlson was such a wonderful person. In a word Quality! My deepest sympathy.
Bob Adams says
Connie and family,
Randy’s passing is not only your personal loss, but one for the extended community. His legions of students will remember him warmly. And I am personally thankful for his patient mentoring of me as a first-year history teacher at Capital High so many years ago. …And for his friendship and support in the time beyond that first difficult year, as well! He wanted his students to see viewpoints beyond dry textbooks and to explore ideas that challenged their past experience and perhaps comfort level. He coached me, by his example, to try similar approaches in the class room. He was caring, compassionate and as many have noted, a person of great good humor.
My thoughts are with you in thinking of your, and all of our, loss. The world was a better place for Randy’s presence.
Terri Hune Purcell says
