Rebecca (Byrd) Martin, 55, of Helena, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on July 29, 2016. Rebecca was born October 15, 1960 in Helena to George Byrd & Norma (Jarrett) Byrd of York. She attended schools in Helena, Great Falls, and Philipsburg, as well as Helena Vo-Tech and U of M.
She married Greg Martin in 1983. They later divorced but remained good friends. Rebecca was a cashier at Martin’s IGA and many years for Safeway in Helena and Missoula. The job she truly loved was social work through the Salvation Army while attending U of M. She had an amazing work ethic. But her most important role and love was in parenting three children; Lisa, Cynthia and Eric; who always came first in her life and her heart.
Rebecca was a simple person, but had a heart of Gold and wore her feelings on her sleeve; quietly being a friend to all she met. Her siblings cherished her and describe her as being smart, full of empathy, loyal, witty, strong but gentle, compassionate, stubborn, sarcastic, patient, loving and fun, with a laugh that was very contagious. In a large family, she was the calm in the storm. She had an amazing memory, intellect, and artistic talent. She loved to read & paint, family gatherings, camping and spending time with her Granddaughter Ophelia (they were best friends).
She was preceded in death by her mother, Norma Byrd, her ex-husband Greg Martin and good friend Willie LaPier. She is survived by her children, Lisa Martin, Cynthia (Colin) Curry and Eric Mayer; her grandchildren Ophelia Martin, Ciaran Curry, and Meadow and Sky Tiffiel; her father George Byrd, her siblings, Carol Byrd, Peggy Byrd, Bob Byrd, Sally Byrd, and Jenny (Chris) Dargan, also her step sisters, Renee Schroyer, Teri Mundahl, Lori Mann, Nancy Gartner and Jodi Lindgren, Aunt GayLynn and Uncle Arvid Johnson, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Memorial Service and potluck luncheon will be held on Sunday, August 7th, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Eagles at 801 N. Fee Street in Helena.
