Richard (Dick) T. Conboy, age 87 of East Helena passed away February 11, 2019 at home. He was born July 31, 1931 to Thomas and Agnes (Knudson) Conboy in Scobey, Montana. The family moved to East Helena in 1947 where Dick attended Helena High School graduating in 1949. Following graduation from Carroll College in 1953, Dick joined the army at Fort Lewis, Washington in 1956. Dick served in Germany with the 2nd Armored Division headquarters in Bad Kreuznach, west of the Rhine River. He was honorably discharged in 1962.
Throughout his career, Dick worked for various State Agencies. The last 20 years of his employment was as Deputy Clerk of Court for the Montana Supreme Court retiring in 1983.
A life-long bachelor, with nieces and nephews living in Texas, Dick was “adopted” by the family of Bill O’Leary, a friend from Carroll College. Joining in holidays, vacations and all celebrations Dick could be found sitting around the O’Leary family table, welcoming all visitors, sharing stories and joining in the lovable chaos that envelops large Irish families. The O’Leary kids remember Dick patiently teaching all five of us to drive, bringing us fresh rhubarb from his garden and wanting to hear the details of all our adventures. joining in on many memorable camping trips in the Swan, we now rarely make a campfire without fondly invoking his name as we load on the wood; his zest for “the higher the better” flames etched in our minds. In later years, whenever the family gathered, Dick always wanted to be there on the first night as he knew that’s when the best stories were recited. His quote “you can’t put a price on a good time” will be remembered often as will his very genuine and contagious laugh.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Agnes Conboy, his sister Mary Ann Marsh, brother Robert (Bob) Conboy and friend Bill O’Leary. He is survived by nephew, Joseph Marsh (Linda Lee), nieces Connie Olson, Cathy Marsh, Sharon Reich, and Barbara Hickman as well as cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of O’Leary’s and dear friends in the area.
Dick was blessed with many good friends, especially Gina Batten (Shiloh) who arranged his care and made it possible for him to remain comfortably at home these last few years. A special thanks to the caregivers who tended to Dick and loved his cats as much as he did.

My deepest condolences to Dick’s ‘family’ and friends. Dick and his family were neighbors of ours for many years in East Helena. I have many fond memories of Dick and his family smiling from the front porch of their home as we roller skated on the sidewalk. Rest in peace, Dick and thanks for being part of the greater East Helena Family.

Husband Tom and I are in AZ for the winter months, so consider it a a cosmic coincidence that JUST a day before reading this sad news in the on-line Helena IR, we were for some reason discussing the morning 54 years ago when Dick called to say I had passed the bar exam so had to appear in the Supreme Court chambers the next morning to be sworn in. We have many fond memories of Dick and Bill and Lucille O’Leary – whose wedding we attended. Our thoughts are with you all.

I.worked at the Supreme Court in the 80s. I always enjoyed talking with Dick and thought he was a very kind man. I live in East Helena and would see him at the post office from time to time. We always reminisced about working at the “Court.” RIP Dick.
