Richard “Dick” Huxley age 88 of Helena

October 10, 1928 – February 6, 2017

Richard Elliot Huxley, 88, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017, at home in Helena with his children nearby. Richard was born October 10, 1928, in Livingston, MT, to Thomas and Anna Huxley. He grew up in Lewistown, MT., attended Montana School of Mines for 2 years; spent summers working in Yellowstone National Park before going to Minneapolis, MN., where he met Mildred Westberg. They were married on June 12, 1953 and had four children. In 1965 the family moved to Portland, OR, where Richard worked for the US Fish and Wildlife. He retired in 1991 and moved to Helena, MT., with Mildred to be near their children and grandchildren. He had a wide variety of interests, including the Civil War and Lewis and Clark.

He and Patty recently started attending St. Paul’s Methodist Church. As his health deteriorated, Hospice of Saint Peter’s started coming to the house in April 2015, and took excellent care of him until the end. He always looked forward to their visits.

Richard is survived by his daughters; Ruth (Larry) Rohde and Patricia Huxley; son, Charles (Annie) Huxley; sisters, Jean Davis of Billings, MT., and Joan McCune of Pocatello, ID.; grandchildren, Andy Rohde, Sarah (Rick) Brown, and Wendy (Scott) Vergobbi; great granddhildren, Emily, Cody, And Brady Vergobbi; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred; daughter, Dorothy; sisters, Helen Hufford and Mildred Dickman and brothers John Huxley and Tom Huxley.

Memorials may be made in Dick’s name to the Hospice of St. Peter’s Hospital c/o St. Peter’s Hospital, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601 or St. Paul’s United Methodist Church 512 Loan St., Helena, MT 59601. Please visit below to offer the family a condolence or to share a memory of Richard.

Dear Patty and family ~ just want to offer my condolences to you and your family at this very sad time. Your parents live on in all of you and what a fine job they did raising you, Patty, a dear sweet person who I miss seeing so much since I retired from hairdressing. You, Patty, were such a comfort and joy to your Dad, especially during these later years. As you move through your grief and times goes by, I hope you can be sustained by all the good memories you have from times spent with your Dad. God bless you.

So sorry ro read that your sweet dad has passed away. Loved seeing both him and your mom
when we lived in MT. and went to church together, and I remember the fun party at their house that

    To Patty and family,
Sure sorry to read the obituary of your father. I have very fond memories of him and your mom, mostly at church but seemed to always be bumping into your dad on the street. He always had some wise crack thing to say!
I know you’ll cherish the memories.
    Peace and joy to you.

Both my husband and I worked with “Hux” at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Portland, OR. We are so sorry to hear of your loss, and offer our condolences. I worked near Hux for awhile and recall one time – around 3 in the afternoon – he grabbed a cardboard mailing tube and bellowed into it! It woke us all up and made us laugh – as only he could do. He was one in a million – a joy to work with and could always make us laugh. We have such fond memories of him. With our sympathy to all in his family,

    Ben and Jean Harrison
