Robert Martin “Bob” Swain, age 61, of Helena passed away Thursday morning December 25, 2014 of a heart attack. Bob was born in Helena, Montana on July 22, 1953 to Fred and Virginia Swain. He spent most of his life in Helena. He attended grade school and graduated from Helena High.
He enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the USS Midway during the Vietnam War. Bob was very proud of his service to our country. He liked to get with other veterans and share stories about their time in the military. He also liked to do volunteer work at Ft. Harrison helping other veterans.
After his service in the Navy, Bob worked in Superior, Mt for Diamond International. He worked as a boiler operator for many years there. When the mill closed down, he moved back to Helena. He worked for the Helena School District and several other local businesses.
Bob was a story teller; he loved sharing the many stories with others of life and life experiences. He touched many lives by his simple lifestyle. He will be missed by his good friends. Bob also enjoyed being in the mountains and outdoors of Montana. He always looked forward to going to Jerry Creek. It’s a piece of land that our family owns just south of Butte, MT. He liked to fish and shoot firearms when we would stay there. Bob was preceded in death by his father Fred W. Swain. He is survived by his mother, Virginia; son, William; grandson, Matthew; brothers, Ken (Cindy Donovan) and Ed Swain and former wife Arlene and many nieces nephews and friends.

I am sorry for your loss Ginny, Ken, Ed. I have so many memories of Bob, growing up on 9th Ave with your family. I remember how Bob would always be our “umpire” calling balls and strikes for our neighborhood whiffle ball games. He sure enjoyed doing that (even though we usually disagreed with his calls). 🙂
