On the 29th of January 2023, Robert (Mike) Michael Dellwo, surrounded by his wife and children passed on from this life and was able to meet his Lord and Savior whom he so faithfully served throughout his life.
Mike was born on May 31, 1949 in Choteau, Montana to Robert and Helen (Reiquam) Dellwo. Mike loved to play outside with his older brother David and enjoyed the freedom to roam the town often causing havoc wherever they went. Mike attended Choteau grade school and Choteau High School where he excelled in swimming, track, and baseball. His love of sports and competition would help him to serve his students later as a teacher, principal, and coach. In 1966, Mike graduated from Choteau High and then went to Western Montana College where he pursued a teaching degree. While there working one summer, he saw a young lady walk across a bridge and told his friend he was going to marry that girl one day. That girl turned out be Arlene Bremer, his future wife of 49 years.
Mike’s teaching career began in Basin, Montana in 1972. Four years later, he took a teaching position in Clancy, Montana for 21 years. Mike had a love of history and wanted to instill this in his students leading him to begin campouts with the 7th grade students where they learned lifelong outdoor skills. For the 8th grade class he took them on a yearly history trip highlighting Montana’s most historical sites, and later expanded by taking groups of students to Washington D.C. and New York. Eventually, all of these great adventures inspired a passion in video editing and production, and “The Video Man” was born. Mike would celebrate weddings and other special occasions and create lasting memories for them in the process.
Mike was a devoted teacher, basketball, baseball, and track coach. Later in his career he would move his family to Boulder, Montana, where he was the principal of the grade school for 2 years. He then retired from public education and moved to the private school sector where he was teacher and principal at Helena Christian School for 17 years.
It was toward the end of his teaching career that Mike began experiencing some changes in his health and his battle with vascular dementia began. He fought a courageous battle alongside his best friend and devoted wife, Arlene, who faithfully walked beside him and was patient through his ups and downs. He leaves behind a lifetime of fond memories including capture the flag, competitive rounds of cards with friends, water balloon fights, pinecone wars and a good western or two.
When Mike gave his heart to the Lord in 1981, his life was forever changed. This decision marked his way of life moving forward, influencing the way he loved his wife and family, taught, and cared for others. Because of the forgiveness and grace, he experienced in Christ, he was motivated to give his time, money and talents in any way he could. If you were to ask him one thing he would like to remember about his life, it was his love for Jesus and love of country. If you ran into Mike, he never hesitated to hand out a copy of the Constitution or a Gideon Bible—a testament of his faith to share Christ with anyone he met. Even when he faced the hardest point of his disease, his life exemplified his commitment to serving the Lord.
It has been said that Mike lived two lifetimes, I think most people would agree.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Helen Dellwo. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Arlene Dellwo; brother and sister-in-law David (Nancy Inglis) Dellwo, sister and brother-in-law Jamie (Greg) Maurer, brother and sister-in-law Doug (Margi Ulvestad) Dellwo; children Becky (Hank) Oxarart, Bryan (Sarah) Dellwo, Rachel (Dave) Nichols and Liz (Shane) Scanlon – grandchildren Ashton, Jace, Luke and Josie Oxarart, Caia and Isla Dellwo, David, Matthew and Jacob Nichols and Ford and Yardley Scanlon. There are also many other precious relatives and friends who survive him.
Memorials in Mike’s name may be made to Helena First or to Helena Gideons, Box 627 Helena, MT 59624.

Debbie Walker says
My heart is heavy for the Dellwo family and friends. Mike was such an outstanding teacher and man. Mike was my student teacher in Dillon and went on to teach my daughter in Clancy. He always had a winning and warm smile. He will be missed greatly by the community, friends and family. Fly high Mike.
Sheila Green Gerding says
Great memories of Mr. Dellwo! What a wonderful man. Nothing but good memories and a smile that warmed your heart. He really had a way with people and will forever be remembered as a positive influence in so many lives. Rest In Peace!
Melinda Magill says
Mike was an amazing man of God!! I was honored to teach across the hall from Mike for his last 8 years in Clancy. Mike showed me, through his actions and love of Jesus, what it was to live a life for Christ. He was a man of truth, integrity and loyalty. He stood for Christ no matter the situation. He lived a life for Christ every moment of every day. When I first began following Christ, Mike was a role model to me and a big supporter as I navigated my own walk. Mike, you have touched more lives than you will ever know. You are leaving an amazing legacy, and heaven has gained a warrior!! Arlene, so sorry we are not home to celebrate his life with you and the kids. We love you all and will be praying for you. Please give a special hug to Rachel.
Jeff & Linda Kindrick says
Both of our kids attended Cornerstone Christian Academy where Mike served as principal.
After having attended Helena Middle School for one year we moved our son from the public school to private school sector at Cornerstone Christian School. Our son thrived in that environment and continued his education in a Christian environment. I know part of his success was due in part to Mike’s involvement and leadership.
Our daughter was part of the 8th grade class that went to New York City in 2000. We have a picture of her riding in one of the tower elevators and have the ticket stub. I believe that will be a memory she will have forever.
Mike has had a tremendous impact on both of our kids. It is heartbreaking to learn that his final years were stolen due to his battle with vascular dementia. Though his memories were likely diminishing, his family will carry them forward.
God bless all of you.

Kimberly V says
Mr D was an incredible teacher and basketball coach to the littles. Starting in 5 grade, he spent time helping us learn the rules on the court and the importance of working as a team. As a history teacher, he was never frustrated with his students, even those of us where learning was a little more of a challenge. He was kind and took time to ask about life outside of the classroom too and trying to find ways to help learning become a little easier.
And as a theater teacher, Mr D was always pushing us to get outside our comfort zone. The music videos he had us create were always memorable and a fun project.
Prayers for the family.
Jan Voorhees Finnan says
Mike and I were school friends in Choteau. We didn’t stay in touch, but I can tell you that already as a child he had a kind smile and loved a good joke. The stories I read here are a heartwarming catch-up. So sorry Arlene and family for your loss.
Sharon Flynn says
Mike and Arlene, I always think of you both. You were, and are one of the greatest examples of Christian character that I have known. You gave and give yourself to all. Mike was a Christian brother to me and Steve. Mentoring by example and friendship. Arlene my prayers are with you as you are now on the journey of grief that is the price of love. Mike has entered the best part of eternal life with relief from earthly sorrows. The memories of the good times with Mike will be a treasure and Jesus walks with you and God holds you in His hands at all times. Mike will be missed. I love you Dear Arlene and family.
Don Gordon says
So sorry for your loss. I remember racing with Mike in track. He could always beat me in the 50 yard dash. It would take the 100 yard or longer to get ahead of him. Kathy and Will miss bumping in you two around the
Town, like Costco.
Shirley Batterdhell says
I will always have positive loving memories of the Dellwo family. I am so sorry to hear that Mike has passed. He was a dear person, and I know Arlene did everything she could to help him in this difficult decline. Mike was a blessing to many students. The Dellwo Family is a testament to Mike and Arlene’s Christ-likeness.
So sorry for your loss!

Another choteau classmate checking in. We were a pretty close group as we could tell from our class reunions. At our 40th there were only a few missing and at our 50th there were 35 of us showed up. It was so good to see Mike there with his smile for everyone. He was one of the “good guys” who always warmed your heart when he was there. I am sure your memories of him will continue to warm your heart and help the family carry on. God bless you all.
Cynthia Joy Shaw says
I worked with Mike for 18 years and have known him for 25 years! Needless to say he is one of my favorite people! He was also among my two daughters favorite teachers! My heart aches for his family and this world lost a great man! He has touched so many lives for the Lord! His knowledge of History and teaching experience was inspiring and I gleaned from his knowledge many times! I pray that everyone he shared the gospel with have either already received Jesus as their Savior or through his life and death will be lead to do so now!
Whitney McLaughlin says
There are very few educators in the world who have made the type of impact that Mr. Dellwo has made. I am so thankful for his leadership, integrity, and passion for education and young children. All of his leadership helped shape me into the person I am today, and I’m proud to try to continue his legacy by being an amazing teacher in his honor!
I remember seeing him years after I graduated from Cornerstone. We were at a football game, and I got up to leave before the game was over. He jokingly yelled out to me to sit down because the game wasn’t over. While I immediately sat down, Mrs. Dellwo laughed and reminded me I no longer had to follow his directions. However, even fifteen years later, I felt nothing but respect (and a healthy amount of fear) for him! He will be missed, but I can only imagine Jesus meeting him at the gates of heaven saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
David and Arlene Diehl says
Mike and Arlene have made a mark that can’t be erased!! What a wonderful testimony for Jesus!
John Cherie Dahl says
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Arlene and the rest of the family 🙏 Mike was an inspiration to so many people and Cherie so enjoyed working with Mike at The Christian School. He was an amazing man 😊
Wayne & Bonnie Luksha says
The idea that God would Bless Bonnie and I with the friendship of Mike and Arlene is a testament to God’s love and grace. We’ll never forget the laughs we shared over a game of Sequence followed by a big bowl of ice cream. Forever ingrained in us is the love Mike shared with us during Bible Study in their home. Heaven is an even more beautiful place because Mike is there now.
Donald R. Erdmann says
What a blessing it is to count Mike Dellwo as a friend. He is a true Man of God. He is a Warrior for Christ. He had such a positive influence on our son. He had such a positive influence on so many people. I remember him on the gym floor portraying Sonny Bono. That really made me laugh.
I grieve for Mike’s family because he is temporarily absent from them, but I praise God that he gave us such a good, good Man. Go with Christ, my friend. I will see you soon.
Jonathan Habel says
Mr. Dellwo left a true positive impact upon so many individuals in his life time. I’ll never forget walking past him in the halls of Cornerstone and him always smiling at me and asking me how my day was going. My heart hurts because earth lost a great man, but I celebrate because I know Mr. Dellwo is with his Lord and Savior now.
To his family – I feel for your loss, but I am grateful its only temporary until you all get to reunite in a better place once more with him.
Thank you for being a faithful servant here Mr. Dellwo and leaving a legacy we all wish we emulate!
Mark & Theresa Erickson says
Mike taught Jr. High History to all three of our children. They and their classmates were so very prepared for High School Government class and to view the world from a Christian perspective. I taught with Mike at Helena Christian for 17 years. He truly was a man of God who showed his students and fellow teachers how to live for Christ and live & serve in this world, mostly by example and on occasion, with words. Until we meet again, Mike.
Sandee badger says
Mike was a co-worker and friend. We taught together many years. Because of our love for history, my husband and I started accompanying him on school tours to Washington DC and New York City. Mike ran a tight ship but was delighted to attend our yankee games. I always had the utmost respect for Mike. He was a special man! May God comfort as only He can!
Yvonne Beasley says
I first met Mike & Arlene when we went to a Bible study at the Duffy’s house in the early 80’s. We shared God’s word together & many laughs & fun times too. Mike will be missed here on earth, but I’m so thankful we’ll all be together again for eternity. What a blessed hope we have as believers in Christ. I love you Arlene & all of your family. I pray for God’s peace in your lives as you remember & cherish all the wonderful memories you have of Mike.
Mary Ann Gregory says

Sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. I knew him when I was a student in Clancy School in the 70’s. Although I did not have him as my teacher but my brother did he was a sure favorite of everyone. Later down the road he was to be my own children’s principal in Boulder where they totally adored him. He always knew you no matter where he saw you and always made it a point to talk to you. He was a great human being who will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers to Arlene and family. May you find comfort in your faith, family, friends and the many special memories you will treasure forever.
Maggie M. says
Arlene, you and your family are in my thoughts. Mike was a very special person and glad you two had each other. Deepest sympathies.

My boys Witt and Austin York and I , Jenny York loved and respected Mike ( from Clancy Grade School )We are so sorry to see this has happened please accept our deepest condolences . May he rest in peace with his Lord.
Shelby Austin says
I can’t explain very well just how much of an impact Mr. Dellwo had on my life. I know SO MANY others can say the same—and that is the mark of a truly great and godly man.
I remember being a first grader at Hill Park during recess as Mr. Dellwo spun passed a kickball in my direction. Upon a successful catch he gave me a big high five and a can of root beer.
Then as a 3rd grader, marching along in a line of like 50 elementary school kids behind Mr. Dellwo as he took us on a walk around the block in the freezing cold because it was too chilly to be outside for recess but we needed to get some energy out. It was probably quite the funny sight to see.
I remember sitting in his 8th grade geography class, right in the center, in the very front because he knew I couldn’t see the board very well. And I loved playing for him in middle school basketball. He was just so knowledgeable about so many things.
I remember him often, especially when I hear Micah 6:8 or as I get to coach middle school basketball myself. I’m so thankful that on top of geography and basketball, he taught me steadiness of character, compassion, and hope. He modeled those things to every person he met.
Honored I got to know you, Mr. Dellwo. What a joy and relief it must be to be with Jesus now.
Linda Nelson says
My husband and I were welcomed to our home in the Sunhaven subdivision by Mike and Arlene. Many pleasant memories were shared across the fence and at neighborhood parties. I had such respect for Mike, a man who lived his faith every day. Arlene, you know that my heart goes out to you. May you continue to feel God’s presence surrounding you every day.
Kathleen Broussard says
I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Mr. Dellwo was my basketball coach at Clancy school. I believe we were the first girls basketball team. And any time I saw him, he still remembered me.

Wandy Beatty says
In all my years of education, Mr. Dellwo was absolutely my best teacher. I was his student for four years at Clancy Elementary, including his very first class, 5th and 6th grade combination. He brought energy and creativity to the classroom including Giant Monopoly, the Brain and Brawn Bowl, and the best math challenges. He was tough, but fair and kind, with an enormous smile. Mr. Dellwo was an awesome teacher and coach who made a lasting impact that I still feel more than 45 years later. My sincere condolences to Arlene and his entire family.
Jennifer "Hausler" Grubb says
Mr. Dellwo was a favorite teacher of mine from Clancy. I had moved to Clancy for my 8th grade year in 1984, moving from East Helena – “the big school”. He was always the highlight of my day – always had a smile, a loud howdy, and easy to talk with. I went to high school in Helena, but always seemed to run into him – we would talk for a while and share some laughs. After I had grown, got married and had my kids, I ran into him – he had aged, but was the same fun, happy man, I remembered. I wanted you to know that he was special – he shared his greatness, he was meant to be a teacher, to spread his love. My memory of him will forever be with me and bring a smile to my face. My heart and prayers are with all that he touched – he will be missed.
Donald A. Erdmann says
Mr. Dellwo was a one of a kind man. I went through most of my education (1st-12th grade) with him as my teacher/principal at the Christian school. From the recesses at the park playing tag football, to answering history trivia for candy, and having him lead us through US history in our DC trip, the man left an incredible impact on my life. I’m monumentally thankful to have been blessed with such a wonderful role model. Just like David, Mr. Dellwo was a man after God’s own heart.
Rest easy good and faithful servant of the Lord.
Ted Polette says
Dear Arlene, Becky, Brian, Rachel, Elizabeth, and family members,
My heart goes out to you during this most difficult of times. Mike was such a blessing to everyone he met, always greeting us with a firm handshake, and brilliant smile that was so big it went from his mouth to his eyes! 🙂 The sheer number of condolences on this website is a testament to the impact he had on this world. He was always looking for a way to help and encourage his students. I was lucky enough to teach with him at Clancy School for 8 or 9 years and organize the 7th grade camp outs each year with him. We would brainstorm for months the outdoor classes that we thought students would enjoy and then “twist” the arms of community members that had that knowledge to come and be guest instructors. We then got to reap the benefits of those months of preparations and watch the students smile and laugh as they tried new things like rappelling, shooting black-powder rifles, or going on a nature hike! Mike loved exposing his students to new things and experiences. The last time I saw him was at the Edgewater Farm in Townsend before Halloween in 2021, when he was enjoying the fun and games with his loving family on a beautiful, sunny day!
Grief is commensurate with the amount of love you have for someone and that is why it hurts so incredibly much when we lose them. The pain is worth the love that you shared during their lifetime. May your journey through the wilderness of grief be softened by your wonderful memories of a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
Where there is sadness, love plants a garden of memories. Enjoy the blooms. May God bless Mike and all of you.
David Dellwo says
Dear Mike,
Thanks for the memories of camping and exploring creeks, rivers, lakes, mountains, and especially Ted Perry’s field.
Thanks for the memories of goldfish, goffers, magpies and buffalo.
Thanks for the memories of summer baseball, volleyball, badminton, hide-and-seek, swimming, and the nickel we shared.
Thanks for the memories of visits to Grandma’s house on Halloween, fall visits to the
neighborhood store on our way to school, and the candy we shared.
Thanks for the memories of winter sledding, snow forts, and the Christmas trees we decorated.
Thanks for the memories of spring mud puddles we emptied and Easter eggs we gathered on the Court House lawn.
Thanks for all the cherished memories of our shared childhood.

Tom Rasmussen says
We sometimes hear the phrase, “A life well lived”. Mike exemplified that trait as well as anyone I have ever known.
Through his life as a husband, father, grandfather, teacher, mentor and walking day by day as “salt and light” he stood
tall and I know his life was pleasing to his God and Father in heaven.
So this is a tme to celebrate this amazing life that touched so many people along the way and celebrate his “graduation” into the heavenly realm as he walks the streets of gold with the angels and his Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ.
Aaron Herriges says
The written Word from God’s inspiration is laced with language regarding rewards according to a person’s conduct. Mike is the prime example of this inspired written Word. After our Lord and His saints, of course. Only because his vision and heart was in the right place. The conduct means nothing unless the heart is in submission to God’s will. He has blessed many lives, but the most, Arlene’s and the rest of his family. Know this everyone, Mike has received a very special room in our Father’s mansion. No doubt about it.
Dara (Sturdevant) Anderson says
I have lots of memories from Clancy grade school, but one in particular that I will never forget about Mr Dellwo. I wasn’t the fastest runner in track and very self conscious when it came to sports in general. I was at gym one day, running around the track to warm up (my nightmare). I was usually the last one and kids would be waiting for me to finish. Mr Dellwo was tough but a kind man, he could tell I was embarrassed and announced loudly that I had very good posture when I ran. :0). It was the positive affirmation I needed so the other kids wouldn’t make fun of me.
Grief is the price we pay for love, but so worth it!
My heart goes out to the family during this most difficult time.
Pam Rudio Novak says
Sending loving thoughts and prayers to the Dellwo family. I am forever grateful to have known him and will never forget the impact Mr. Dellwo made in the community and to the Clancy School. He led and taught by example; an amazing teacher, mentor, coach and friend to myself and so many others! What a beautiful legacy to leave behind! I am so very sorry for your loss.
Dirk Nelson says
Mike was a great Christian. After death, that’s the compliment that iI hope to carry into heaven. Especially from a next door neighbor who better yet is from a different church. Jesus said to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and might and love your neighbor as yourself. And that’s just what Mike did. He is humbly a good and faithful servant of God.
Grace Johnson says
Thinking back to his time as my principal, all my teachers taught the spelling of “principal” as “p-r-i-n-c-i-pal”, because, “Mr. Dellwo is your pal!” Yes, a helpful spelling reminder, but also a heartfelt truth. Some of my fondest memories of achievement in elementary school are marked by a handshake or verbal affirmation from Mr. Dellwo. Then, when he became my teacher in middle school, every morning was spent in the book of Micah. Although at the time I remember feeling tired from the repetition, I am so thankful for his new integration of Micah 6:8 every day. I am saddened to hear of Mr. Dellwo’s passing, but I can’t help but think of the celebrations he is having in heaven right now. He was incredibly influential on this community and on me, I am so thankful for his life of service.
Donna Groth Rudolph says
Bob, Helen, and family lived next door to my family in Choteau. When I think of Mike, I think of sports. He also did some student teaching in Choteau. Mike taught golfing to our high school PE class. He was a great teacher. God bless his family.
jessie (Work) lesofski says
Mr Dellwo was one of my all time favorite teachers. He truely had a big impact on my life.
I was a shy timid kid. I didnt really have a decent coat the winter I was in 7th grade– I made due with a ratty hand-me-down jacket with a beer emblem on it that was two sizes too big. Mr D took me aside one day and gave me a shiney rad satin school jacket, complete with a cougar screen printed on the back! – in my size even! He said it was an extra, but Im sure he bought it out of his own pocket. I wore that thing til it was in tatters and two sizes too small- well into high school! It was my security blanket.
I was in 8th grade the first year that the school consented to the history field trip. My Dad refused to let me go. Mr D called him and somehow managed to convince him to change his mind. I’m not sure how he pulled that off, since Dad could be an old hard head. That trip was sooo awesome! I learned so much and had so much fun. He also managed to convince the old man to let me go to our 8th grade graduation dance- he even drove me home at the appointed time.
I wonder what he’d have to say knowing my kids are now either attending, or graduated, from his old alma mater in Choteau?? We make it a point to do an annual summer trip to Virginal City/Nevada City etc. and study MT history- a small legacy he inspired many years ago.
Im certain god greeted him at the pearly gates to welcome him home. He was a truely good person and I am grateful for the roll he played in my life.
Wendy Tonkovich says
Arlene and family,

Arlene:
I am so sorry for the loss of Mike. He was a good and trustworthy friend, we played Baseball, Track and Football together. He was always fun to play with. He always gave 110%! His chuckle and smiles were imprinting on all his friends.
We first met in first grade. He was always the speedster of our class. Whether it be baseball, basketball, or dodgeball. I had the privilege of working with Mike during the summer of our Sophomore Junior year. We worked on the Teton County bridge crew, building bridges and replacing Culverts. We also had to drive flatbed trucks hauling gravel, pipe and bridge building supplies. Sometimes I would drive the other times Mike would drive. It was a fun time sharing with one another. We were both anxious for football to start.
During his Senior year Jerry Luinstra and Mike were on Homecoming Court. Marsha Stott was Crowned Queen. Jerry Luinstra shared that Mike was Crowned King. The picture in the annual was quite funny because Mike forgot to take his mouthpiece out. I do not think I’ve ever seen him as nervous as that.
When I got married to my wife Nancy (Larson), Mike was an attendant at our wedding. Nancy was a member of our class. I do have remorse I did not keep in better contact with you and Mike. I have been working for a few weeks on this letter but it seemed like every time I start the floodgates open. Of all the fun memories of Mike. I was so blessed to know that Mike knew the Lord!
Arlene, I pray for blessing over you, your children and your grandchildren that you will never forget Mike.

I will always remember Mr. Dellwo with fond memories of my childhood and Clancy Elementary School.
