Robert Michael Hampson (Mike)
Jan 15, 1950 – Dec 29, 2023
Mike was born Jan 15, 1950 in Livingston, MT. He was the second child of Robert D. Hampson and Elsie Lee Black Hampson. He passed away at home, which is where he wanted to be, shortly before his 74th birthday.
Mike spent part of his childhood relocating with his Mother, living in Livingston, Butte and Helena just to name a few.
In 1969 he was drafted into the United States Army and headed to several duty stations, prior to being shipped overseas. The Army wanted to make him a cook, but Mike wasn’t having it, so he went 101st Airborne. He figured jumping out of planes was better than cooking. While in Basic, on the final PT test, he broke his leg and had to start all over, he was totally not impressed. After training he headed to Vietnam doing 2 tours. When he returned to Montana he went to work for Yellowstone National Park, where he spent several years, as a cook of all things!
A number of years ago, while on the phone with Preston F. who served with Mike in Vietnam, Vicki was informed of Mikes heroics. Preston informed Vicki in a moment that Mike was away from the phone that Mike had saved his life. Preston stated that they were under heavy fire and couldn’t get any support because of it. Preston said he looked up & he could see Stella (Mike’s truck) heading their way. He said it was the best feeling. When support finally got there & the chopper finally landed they were told to board, the guy’s said no, Montana (Mike) took a chance & they all loaded into Stella to head out. Vicki asked Mike why he never told her about any of this and he said “It would seem like bragging, it wasn’t something you talked about, it was just something you did.”
On July 11, 1981 he married Vicki Yasenosky in Poplar, Montana. Together they have 5 children: Skiler Elizabeth, Robert J. (Bobby), Alexis (Lexi), Aaron and Annicka. In April of 1984 he went to work for the Montana Army National Guard, fulltime in Culbertson, Montana. They lived in Culbertson until 1989. Mike was transferred to Helena and that is where he retired from the Montana Army National Guard with close to 32years in service.
Mike is survived by his wife Vicki, their 4 living children, Bobby (Kaylin, grandsons Easton, Grantly and Caleb), Lexi (James, grandson Cooper), Aaron, and Annicka (David, and grandchildren Sadie (Donny, great grandson Louie), Makayla and Ethan. He is preceded in death by his daughter Skiler, his sisters Vicki and Peggy as well as his parents Kelly and Bob.

DANIEL HAMPSON says
Dear Vicki, Bobby, Lexi, Aaron and Annicka,
Very sorry to hear about Mike’s death. I didn’t see him often, but I always enjoyed our visits when I did see him. I have many fond memories of our childhoods together. My own health makes it difficult for me to come over tomorrow morning for his funeral. But I will be thinking about him and about you who will grieve him more profoundly. May the strength of the spirit be with you now.
With love,
Daniel Hampson

Vicki and family,
I am so sorry to hear about Mike. He was one of the nicest people I had ever met. Always willing to help anyone and just an all around great guy Always seemed to be happy. Along with you, you raised a great happy family. I will be keeping all of you in my prayers. Vicki, I will be thinking about you more often than I already do. Keep your head up and know that he’s in a better place, and he’ll be the next one to be making your lights flicker.
With Love,
Lois

Vicki – I don’t have any words. You know how much I have always loved him and I’m so glad that he shared you and the kids with me. Thanks for letting me sleep with your husband! You have been in my prayers for decades and even more in the past few weeks and then next. I can’t get there today. Not feeling well. I will miss him for the rest of my life. XXXO

Our thoughts and prayers be with your family. I remember Mike and Vicki with great respect and fondness, during my son’s young years with the Boy Scouts. God Bless you all and may our Lord and Savior give you strength during this loss.

It seems not so long ago our meeting in the Montana National Guard. Mike was on the Honor Guard same time as me, we performed many functions together. I am so sorry for your loss, hoping you can find peace in our Lord Jesus promise of eternal life, we shall meet again.
