Roger Morton passed onto the great chorus in the sky on June 5, 2020 at the age of 72. Roger was born in Torrington Wy to Lois and Gaylord Morton. He lived in Wyoming until he moved to New York in his early twenties. But the West was always in his heart and he soon moved back to Wyoming. Roger started work with Blue Cross of Wyoming in the computer department; which eventually brought him up to Montana in 1973 to work for Blue Cross of Montana to help start up their computer department. After 36 years with the ‘Blues’ Roger retired in 2008. He then continued to enjoy his life singing, fishing, hunting, enjoying the outdoors, and traveling. Roger was an avid Barbershop singer and was happiest performing on the stage. He was a member of several choruses and quartets performing all over the Northwest and Canada.
Roger is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joyce, his two sons Scott (Tiffany) and Michael, his grandson Ryan, and his brother Gary (Diane).

I knew Roger mostly through his wife and my friend, Joyce. When Joyce and I worked together at a small non-profit, Roger was one of the extended family members of staff who would pitch in with their talents and skills and sometimes their physical labor to help the agency. At the time Roger worked full time, spent many hours with singing groups, and still made time to help us out. I knew him as a kind, intelligent, gentle man. I know he will be sorely missed.

I knew Roger as a fellow barbershop singer. My foremost memory is from his comedy singing tenor in one of Montana’s premier quartets. In more recent years Roger sang tenor with me and helped make me a better tenor. When our chorus lost its director Roger served as my mentor learning how to be a director. He was very patient. Roger will be missed. Barb and I offer our prayers in support of Roger’s family in this difficult time.

To Joyce and family. Roger was a good friend and co-worker who had the one very special character trait that set him apart . Integrity: All of us that knew Roger would agree that there was no compromise in how he interacted with family and friends. Zoe and I send our thoughts and condolences.

I was lucky enough to sing with Roger in barbershop for 5 years. I missed his most impressive performance years but feel lucky to have sung with him. His most outstanding quality from my perspective was his ability to mentor without being overbearing. Always willing to answer questions from a beginning barbershopper, he will be missed in our chorus. Thoughts and condolences from Sharon and myself to Roger and his family.

Roger sang with me in the Boothill Betterment Society barbershop quartet for 26 years. He was a great friend and companion, and the comedian in the quartet. we traveled all over Montana, Colorado,Wyoming, Idaho,as well as British Colombia, Saskatchewan Canada, performing on Barbershop Chapter annual shows.
There are lots of fond memories of those trips. Lots of good times with the quartet families getting together.
He is missed greatly already. Our thoughts and prayers are with Joyce and the family forever.

Our brother-in-law, Roger, will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him. He was an honest, compassionate man who put family first. He enjoyed singing and traveling, but most of all spending time with his wife, Joyce. You will be missed. RIP Roger…you were loved. Condolences to the family.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to Joyce and the rest of the Morton family from Colorado.
As neighbors on Saddle Mountain in the ’80s and ’90s we have fond memories of talking with Roger and seeing him perform several times in the Barbershop quartet. Our kids were best of friends growing up and are still in touch to this day. We know Roger will be dearly missed by all his family and friends and was taken from this world way too soon.
Tom & Irene Erdie says
Sorry it has taken me so long to offer sincere thoughts and condolences to Joyce on behalf of Irene and myself. I worked with both of you so many years ago in Great Falls, hiring Roger up from Wyoming, yet the memories feel so much fresher. I enjoyed the times. Roger is one of few folks I know that demonstrated an absolute passion for his music involvement and the communities were better for it. I enjoyed the occasions of “bumping into” the two of you around Helena. I hope those encounters continue. Best Wishes Joyce.

Five Valley Chorus of Sweet Adelines (Missoula) wishes to extend our condolences to Joyce and family. Roger was a special part of the barbershop family and will certainly be missed. His smile always brightened every concert and event and we all knew he was enjoying himself to the fullest while singing barbershop music. We are so very sorry for your loss.
