In Memory Of

Rose Marie (O’Toole) Wiseman, age 62, of Helena

January 23, 1952 – October 4, 2014

Rose Marie O’Toole Wiseman passed on to be with our Lord early in the morning of October 4, 2014. She was born on January 23, 1952 to Bill and Joyce O’Toole. Raised in Helena, she attended local schools and had many interests growing up. She spent a lot of her free time taking care of younger siblings.  In 1965 Bill and Joyce purchased O’Tooles Bar; making it one of the most family friendly bars on the gulch.

From Rose’s marriage to Jim Wiseman she was blessed with her beautiful daughter Corinna ‘Cory’ Michelle Wiseman. Rose and Cory lived in Tacoma, WA until 1985 when they moved back home. Rose participated in the managing and running of O’Tooles until the closing last year (almost 50 years). She was a natural behind the bar, open and friendly to everyone she met. Always willing to help, lend an ear, have a good cry and not afraid to tell you if you were out of line. She had a quick smile, mischievous eyes (lordy, those eyes) and, most of all, a good friend, loyal and true.

As an avid pool player, she participated in pool leagues for O’Tooles, Eagles and others, taking state several times. Rose was a member of the Eagles 16 Lady’s Auxiliary and enjoyed the Easter egg hunts at the Capitol, Christmas pictures with Santa, and anything involving children. She never missed the raising of the Irish Flag on St. Patrick’s Day.

Rose and Jamie met in 1997 and lived together until Rose’s passing. They enjoyed working on their house, turning their yard into a virtual paradise and, of course, a room for Mickey.

Among Rose’s loves in life were family, friends, kids and, especially, animals. They couldn’t pass O’Tooles without getting a treat from Rosie. She loved being by the water whenever possible, gardening, Mickey Mouse, bling and, of course, green.

She was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Joyce O’Toole, two infant siblings, Michael and Diana and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose.

Rose is survived by her partner, Jamie Bala; daughter, Cory; siblings, Dolan (Jill), Shannon (Linda) and Felecia; grandchildren, Zach (24), Dakotah (17), Dhawson (15), Dhestin (10) and by her great grandson, Damien, born February 19, 2014.

Here’s to you, our smiling, Irish Rose. May God bless and keep you. You will be sorely missed by your many friends and family members.

A memorial service celebrating Rose’s life will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home 3750 N. Montana Avenue. A reception will follow in the social center of the funeral home. A continued celebration of Rose’s life will be held at the Eagles Lodge on Fee Street following the reception. Memorials in Rose’s name are suggested to the Hospice of St. Peter’s 2475 Broadway Street Helena, Montana 59601 or to the Lewis & Clark Humane Society P.O. Box 4455 Helena, Montana 59604. There is a saying that goes: Friends are the flowers in life’s garden. Rose’s life garden is full of all those who knew and loved her. Rose you will be missed by all your “flowers”.

Dear Family of Rosie. We are Deeply Saddened by the loss of your Rosie. You have our Sincere Condolences. Rosie was the Lifeline that kept O’Tooles going for so many years. Rosie worked so hard & literally poured her life in keeping the business in survival mode. We truly enjoyed our visits with Rosie. We’d stop in just to say Hi & have a few. On that note, I’m certain Rosie valued all her Loyal Patrons that would come in just to see her & get the latest Last Chance Gulch news flash. Yes, we too will cherish the memories of Rosie. Evy & Judy Smith.

My heart felt condolences go out to you, Jamie, the love of her life and all of her family at this very sad time. Rosie touched many people in many different ways during her short time here on this earth. I know that my son, Jesse Romero, thought the world of her. She was so very good to him, not only when he worked for her at O’Toole’s but, on a more personal level. She was truly an :”Angel lying to close to the ground,”as Willie Nelson would say. My sympathies go out to all of the family, this has been a truly sad & trying year for all of you. We will always have that beautiful smile and her memories to hold dear. Take care and God Bless.

I spent years and years visiting Rose. It was 20 years on Saturday when I first met her. My parents were ill and I would come to Montana to clean my mom’s house and visit my dad in the rest home. When I needed a friend and a smile and just a good person to talk with, she was always there. I loved her dearly. So sorry for your loss.

Rose was a special angel here to guide many. She touched so many lives and helped them on their own journey in life. I was one of those many.
I also believe that now her path is done here, she has been welcomed with open arms from her loved ones to take her to gods good grace. She will be watching over us all now with a smile on her face.
I visited Rosie in the hospital before she went home. We said our goodbyes to one another. As I sat there crying, she told me to never be sorry and to Believe. She also told me that she was so glad that she and I were friends. I feel very blessed to have had that moment with her. Saying goodbye to her was one of the hardest things I have ever done.
To us left behind this journey will be hard without Rosie. My thoughts and prayers are with you Jamie, Corey, along with Rosie’s family and many friends.

Felicia and Family – So sorry to hear of Rose’s passing. She was a great person who loved and enjoyed life. She worked hard to keep the legacy of O’Toole’s Bar alive, especially after the passing of her parents Bill and Joyce. They all worked hard to make the Business a success on the gulch. Sadly, Rose wasn’t able to enjoy life as much over the last year and a half as there was a lot of stress with the Bar’s legal issues which is unfortunate. I hope she is at peace now. She will be missed for sure. Never a day went by that Rose wouldn’t greet you and say Hi outside the bar. Felicia, I’m thinking of you and hope your family will receive some benefits that you so deserve from the business that your parents spent their life building,

  14. Colton Wagner says

I was practically raised inside O’Tooles Bar (and not in a bad way). My grandma Nikki Norris and my mom, Andria LaTray, were both dear friends of Rose’s, and eventually I was blessed to be loved by Rose too. I spent a lot of time and got to know a lot of good people inside that bar, but none were quite as special and loving as Rose was. I would always smile every time I saw her, whether it was in public or walking inside the unmistakable green door (and sometimes the back one too). Aunt Rose was a loving, kind, and unimaginably good woman, and heaven has gained one of the most incredible angels in history. When I think of Rose today, writing this, I can only think “don’t cry because it’s gone, smile because it happened.”

Goodbye Aunt Rose, we all love you and look forward to seeing you again…sometime.

My condolences and prayers go out to you and your family. We go back quite aways in history of O’Tooles Bar as my grandparents owned It pryer to Bill and Joyce. It was called “Slangers” back then. They also had “The Corner Bar” which back then was right across the street from The Gold Bar where The Wells Fargo Bank is now. I will miss reminiscing about those places.
