Ruth Elaine Archibald Thompson, 97, of Helena passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2018 in Helena.
Ruth was born August 14, 1920 in Hobson, Montana to Otto and Zelda Archibald. She graduated from Hobson High School in 1937. In 1939, Ruth married George D. Thompson in Hobson, and they resided there until 1942. George and Ruth then moved from Hobson to Great Falls where George worked as an engineer for the Great Northern and Burlington Northern railroads, and Ruth was a homemaker. In November of 2008, Ruth and George moved from Great Falls to Helena to be closer to family.
Ruth enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and crafting, and was most proud of her beautiful filet crochet wall hangings that many family members and friends have to enjoy. In addition to crafting, Ruth enjoyed cooking and baking, and always had an extra dinner plate or fresh baked cookies ready for family and friends who were around at dinner time or who stopped by to visit. In retirement, Ruth and George enjoyed boating and fishing, especially the summers spent at Holter Lake, along with playing pinochle, camping trips around Montana with friends, Elks Club dances and bowling leagues, and exercise classes and bingo games at the Senior Center in Great Falls.
Ruth was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Marie; husband, George; and sister, Orene Barbee. She is survived by daughter, Sheralyn (Rich) Marble of Clancy; granddaughter, Kirsten Marie Marble of Golden, CO; nieces, JoAnn (Jack) Clark of Townsend, Willa (Bill) Solf of Winnett and Mary Rude of Billings.
Ruth spent her final months at The Legacy living facility, where she was provided the very best compassionate care and kindness from St. Peter’s Hospice and Legacy staff. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter’s Hospice. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., August 12, 2018 at the Philbrook Cemetery in Hobson, MT. I’m so sorry for your loss. I met Ruth while I was a Senior Companion at Hunters Pointe. I enjoyed visiting with her. She was a beautiful, classy, sweet lady! Though she was not one of my clients, I pressed some clothes for her a few times and she in turn, gave me one of her crafts each time. I will always treasure those! Always upbeat and a beautiful smile. She will be missed.
