On the morning of November 12, 2025, Rylan Trevan Osmanson passed away peacefully at home in his parents’ arms after a fierce, 7-month battle with stage IV rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer. He was five days shy of his 14th birthday.
Rylan was born on November 17, 2011, the first-born son of Colin and Delsi (Plummer) Osmanson, in Helena, MT.
Rylan attended daycare from a very early age. When he was almost three, he moved to a daycare that not only built some very special relationships between the children, but the families as well. Those days contained many of Rylan’s fondest memories and he spoke of them often.
Rylan attended Rossiter Elementary School in Helena from kindergarten through 5th grade. He loved his time at Rossiter, including the regular and summer SACC programs, and the friends that he made, several of which he was still very close with to this day. His kind, fun nature and keen intelligence quickly rendered him a favorite among teachers, staff, and other students.
When Rylan started at CR Anderson Middle School, where he was an 8th grader at the time of his passing, it was no surprise that he adjusted to the more challenging environment with ease. He found many more friends and did very well in his classes, obtaining a 4.0 his last completed semester. Following in his father’s footsteps, he played the trumpet in 6th grade band and was invited to play in the jazz band in 7th grade. Though he ultimately chose to decline the invitation, he continued to play in the regular band until his cancer diagnosis prevented him from continuing school.
Rylan was known for his incredible athletic ability, and to watch him run was poetry in motion. During his elementary school years, Rylan participated mainly in soccer and basketball. He played tackle football for the first time in the 6th grade, learned a lot and did well, but it was not his favorite. However, before his diagnosis, he had decided he was going to give it another try in the 8th grade. Rylan also participated in track, running the 100-meter dash, which showcased his speed. He was getting ready to start basketball in 7th grade, but his cancer diagnosis prevented him from getting the chance to play.
Rylan loved everything Star Wars – especially watching the movies with his dad, Legos, animals, camping, hiking, science, watching YouTube, candy, talking and gaming with friends, and his three cats! Rylan was also a Montana State Bobcats fan, no matter how hard his dad tried to convert him to the ‘other side’! But none of those things compare to his brothers! Even though he complained about them constantly and never stopped picking on them, he had a close, special relationship with his two younger brothers and loved them dearly. He also loved connecting with his big brother Treyden through their mutual love of gaming and spent many hours playing and chatting with him through his beloved PS5.
Rylan was a son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend and was very loved. He never let on how serious his condition was or how much pain he was in, even to his closest friends, always wanting to protect his people. He did not like drama or being the center of attention and preferred that everyone just got along. He had a wonderful, witty sense of humor and always had a positive attitude. His smile could easily light up a whole room and melt your heart at the same time. Rylan was kind, compassionate, intelligent, and just a fun, interesting person to be around and have a conversation with. The void he has left will never be filled.
Rylan will be deeply missed by his parents, Colin and Delsi (Plummer) Osmanson, his brothers Ashten (11) and Creyson Osmanson (9) of Helena, MT and Treyden Osmanson (23) of Casper, WY; grandparents Tracy Plummer of Townsend, MT, Linda Osmanson and Paul Osmanson, both of Missoula, MT; aunt Jessie Osmanson of Missoula, MT; uncle Todd (Mollie) Plummer of Helena, MT; and beloved cousins Mariah, McKenzie, and Maycee Plummer; Camden Bertologio; Melissa (Joe) and Tucker Fuller; and Kaden, Blake, and Carter Vaira, as well as many other family and friends.
Rylan was preceded in death by his grandmother Glenda Plummer and great-grandparents Marvin and Dorothy Osmanson and James and Helen Plummer.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 23rd at 1:00 p.m. at CR Anderson Middle School Upper Gymnasium (1200 Knight St., Helena, MT). Coffee and snacks will be provided immediately following the service.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the wonderful doctors, nurses, and other professionals at the Logan Health Children’s Hospital in Kalispell who worked tirelessly to help Rylan fight his best fight and showed him so much love and compassion during this time.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to encourage donations to the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, the Rossiter Parent Council, the CR Anderson Parent Council, or a charity of your own choosing.

Ryland was a gem to have as a student in elementary PE class. He worked hard at all the activities. But what really set him apart was his leadership. Ryland was the guy who helped anyone who needed it, he showed sportsmanship and respect in every situation. Now he makes heaven just a little bit brighter.
Mason Sinner says
My name is Mason Sinner. I’m 14 and go to C.R.Anderson. I also went to Rossiter with Rylan in kindergarten. Rylan was my best friend, and I don’t remember most of Kindergarten, but I do remember Rylan, and messing around with him. We thought it was cool that we had the same birthday. When I moved schools in first grade, it was sad saying goodbye to him. Even when we moved, I still thought of him. Then it comes 7th grade, and I find out we had the same P.E. class together. It was nice knowing that he was doing alright.
Doug Baker says
My condolences to Rylan’s family and friends. I was Rylan’s principal at Rossiter for a few years. I remember him fondly and am saddened by his passing.
