Samuel Harold McCulley passed away on January 22, 2011 at his home in Montana City from liver cancer.
He was born in Bellefonte, PA on June 9, 1932 to John and Ruth McCulley.
Sam graduated from Bellefonte High School and proudly served four years in the U.S. Navy in Pensacola, FL and aboard the USS Monterey. He met the love of his life, Susan Hutchison, in 1971 in Newington, Connecticut. They moved to Helena in January of 1974 and cherished thirty-nine years together. In 1995, Sam retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs following 30 years of civil service as a boiler plant operator.
Sam loved outdoor activities, especially hunting, fishing, and camping. Following retirement, Susan and Sam enjoyed traveling. Two cruises, a trip to Maui, and numerous trips to Vegas brought them some of their most special memories. Sam was an avid Penn State and Pittsburg Steelers fan and there’s no doubt that he’ll be cheering his team to victory in the upcoming Super Bowl. He will be dearly missed by his two dogs, Daisy and Lilly, and many friends and family.
Sam is survived by his lifelong partner and best friend, Susan Hutchison of Montana City; sister, Jean Thompson of Manee, IL; sister, Margaret Benzie of Bellefonte, PA; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Bob Martz of Hagerstown, MD; brother-in-law and his wife, Scott and Cari Hutchison of Helena, MT; sister-in-law and her husband, Barbara and Ed Pulaski of Cheshire, CT; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents (John and Ruth), brother (John), and sister (Esther).
The family will begin receiving friends at 11:00 a.m. with a memorial service celebrating Sam’s life at 11:30 a.m. Friday, January 28th at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow at Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Ft. Harrison. A reception will be held at the Ft. Harrison Service Club immediately following the burial. Memorials in Sam’s name are suggested to Hospice of St. Peter’s 2475 Broadway Street Helena, Montana 59601. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.aswfuneralhome.com.

Sam was a quiet, gracious, gentle, and fun person to be around. “The daughter of his heart”, as he called her, Cari Hutchison, & I will miss him and pray that Sam’s wife, Susan, will be greatly comforted in knowing that ‘he is at peace in a beautiful place’. Sharon Boyd
