On Tuesday, November 7, 2017, we said goodbye to our friend, father, son, brother and husband, Scott Gale Sargent. “Sarge”, 50, passed away peacefully from the effects of septic shock. He was surrounded by friends and family which is how he would have wanted it.
Born Aug 3, 1967 to Gale and Robin Sargent of East Helena, he is survived by his wife, Lori, son Wiley, Daughters Brittany (Garrett) and Jeanne, Grandchildren Gavin, Bradley, Alexander and Erin (Waylon), Great Grandchildren Olivia, Kate and Emma, mother Robin (Ray Goss), brother Ken (Kelly), and sister Lynn Maness (Troy). Nephews Joshua Stevenson (Lisa) Joe Maness (Lauren), Brenden Stevenson, Jesse Calder (Brianna), Cody Maness (Kira), Nate Sargent and Keston Sargent. Nieces Kendra Sargent, Amber Stevenson and Kelcie Sargent. Great Nephews Brayden, Liam, Parker, Brantley, Kadyn (K-Dawg) and Landon. Great Nieces Bailey, Kennedy, McKenzie and soon to be joined by a 4th. Welcoming him home are his father Gale, sister in law, Tressa, and grandparents Jack and Pearl Walsh and Dan and Ellen Sargent.
He graduated Helena High in 1986, attended Western Montana College, and graduated at Montana State University. Sarge’s broad shoulders and large frame matched his big heart. His quick wit, hearty laugh and easy smile, willingness to help with compassion for others, especially toward his son, Wiley, made him a very special man.
Throughout his life Scott drew people toward him and once he had them close, held them there forever. Scott was one of those rare people who when he hugged you and told you that he loved you, you knew it was true for you could feel it. He had a special place in his heart for children and doted on his nephews and nieces. There was nearly nothing he wouldn’t do for a nephew and has never been known to be able to resist a request from a niece.
First in his life was his son Wiley. Scott never made a decision that Wiley wasn’t considered first and foremost. Even those who may not have known him well knew about Wiley for he talked about him often, and it was evident that he was the most important thing in Scott’s life. However, he always would find time for a friend. Those close to Scott, and there are many, never had to wonder where help would come from if they found themselves in need. Scott was always the first one there and with singular purpose…help solve whatever issue presented itself.
Scott put a lot of effort into making others happy. He always had a positive attitude, was quick to smile and laugh and was an expert at making people feel good. He ensured his own happiness when he married Lori, the love of his life, on December 20, 2016. Lori owns a large part of his very big heart. In all the years they have known each other and through their ups and downs, Scott was never heard to speak a harsh word about her. Their time together was definitely too short.
He’ll be so missed by his many friends and family.

Sargent Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Our fondest memories of Scott were the get-togethers at Troy and Lynn’s to celebrate birthdays. Scott was always full of humor and had a big heart of gold. I remember him wrestling with the nephews, watching and playing games, taking them hunting, and just being there as a great uncle—he was just like one of the kids and they all adored him. He was also a great cook—and made some awesome meals at those get-togethers. He was a great man and will be dearly missed!

Jody Pace says
To Scott’s entire family, I am so very sorry for your loss. As one of Scott’s fourth grade teachers (and Lynn’s as well) I can say I have known this family for a very long time. Every single time I ran into Scott or saw him as he pulled into our neighborhood to visit Ken’s family, Scott was kind, friendly and so very special. I last spoke with Scott when he called into Helena Motors this summer to schedule service for Lori’s car. During that conversation Scott told me his life was going well and he was happier than he had been for a very long time. That warms my heart to know he was in such a good place at last. I am so very sad to hear of his passing and hold you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Montana Army National Guard Contracting Team extends their condolences to Scott’s Family and close Friends. We have had the honor of working with Scott for the past 3 plus years at Fort Harrison. He always greeted the Soldiers and the Contracting team with a warm smile and had a contagious positive attitude. He was very adamant in making sure every Soldier who came through the Dining Facility was fed. He cared about everybody and was a pleasure to be around. We have Scott’s Family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Dave Miller says
I am sorry I won’t be able to attend Scott’s service. My illness keeps me from doing very much!
I have very many memories of coaching Scott in both football and wrestling. Wrestling coaches are always looking for a big, strong heavyweight! He was a great kid and a fine man.

Scott was a gentle giant and an all-around wonderful guy. He did much more than he realized to make me feel welcome when I was The New Kid at Helena High. I will always be grateful to him for that. So sorry to hear he is gone.

So sorry to hear about this great loss and that I will not get to talk to Scott again. Always a pleasure from the days at Vann’s where I was his customer to just a few months ago when he was my customer. My thoughts are with his family. He will be missed.
