In Memory Of

Scott Sim, age 62, of Helena

August 17, 1958 – February 11, 2021

SIM, Scott, age 62 of Helena passed away on February 11, 2021. Services are being held on Friday February 19, 2021, 12:00 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church 3580 N Benton Ave, Helena, MT 59602.

Scott Edward Sim passed away in peace at 5:30 am on February 11, 2021 at St. Peter’s Hospital.  He bravely fought a fast and furious fight of pancreatic cancer with a smile on his face and good humor.  He left us at the young age of 62.

Scott was born to the proud parents of Jack and Alice Sim in Cut Bank, Montana on August 17, 1958.  He was raised there with his sister Ellen and brother Mike.  Growing up, Scott helped deliver milk for the family’s creamery until it was sold.  He then followed his passion for motor cross for years where he acquired many broken bones.  He graduated from Cut Bank High School in 1976 and then went to the University of Montana.  After receiving his graduate degree, he moved to Helena and began working for the State at the Department of Corrections.

Scott lived a very enjoyable and adventurous life in his high school, college, and bachelor days!  He cherished those memories and still laughed about them through the years even up to the end.  He enjoyed his hunting, wood-cutting, beer-drinking, fishing, backgammon games, and camping trips.  There was never a shortage of laughter and good times in those days!

He made many friends throughout his lifetime.  He was a hard guy not to like unless it was session and he was your boss.  Scott met his wife while working for DPHHS.  They were married on September 5, 1997.  He was blessed with a family of his step-son and later, three children.  A new chapter of family life began for him and he couldn’t have been more excited.

Scott was a loving and caring father.  He always made sure that he was always there for anything the kids were involved in.   Ballet recitals, bowling tournaments, Special Olympics events, Christmas programs, soccer, floor hockey, basketball, and volleyball games of all the children. Also, travel teams, GT events, church activities, and early release Fridays to have lunch at Pizza Hut with his family.  He introduced motorcycles and woodwork to Jacob.  The family joke was Kaytlin was his pride and joy and was always referred to as his “favorite child,” the one who had him wrapped around his finger!   So true.  However, Marcella, was just that too.  He had so much pride and love when she graduated USMC bootcamp!  He took such delight in showing anyone he encountered a picture of her graduation as he wore his Marine dad shirts!  He shared a special bond with his son, Steven, as they would watch March Madness, baseball games, and partake in the Sunday rituals of the long Football season!  Not to mention the board game dramas on who would win the the most games.

After 33 1/3 years of service, he retired from DPHHS.  Scott was so proud to get his first social security check!  “About time” he said.  He spent his last years watching the children grow up beside his wife.  He enjoyed BBQing, growing his hair out, listening to KGLT; especially Thursday the Grateful Dead Hour, drinking a beer, reading a book, and not having to wear work clothes.

Scott is survived by his wife, Nadine.  His children, Kaytlin, Marcella, and Steven.  His step-son Jacob Hannasch.   His grand-dog Jax.  His brother Mike and niece Morgan of Idaho.  His mother-in-law, Patricia Marble and brother-in-law, Richard Marble, his wife Paula, and their two children.  His lifelong “brothers” Tom, Redbeard, Lenny, Pat, and Larry.

His genuine smile and heart felt laughter will always be missed but NEVER forgotten!!  We love you “mostest” Papa Bear!!

Scott was our former neighbor and a GOOD friend. What a genuinely kind man he was; never hesitating to lend a hand. We loved listening to him proudly talk about his kids and we still have a photo of you Marcella, that your Dad sent us when he and your Mom went to your bootcamp graduation. I hope you kids know that he will never leave your side now; he’s watching over you until you meet again … and you WILL meet again. 🙏😇 Nadine, you are all in our prayers; we were so sorry to hear this sad news.

Nadine, Scott’s children and other family,

I worked with Scott at SRS/DPHHS and remember his great smile and unfailing good humor (except during the legislative session!). I also worked briefly with Nadine in the Director’s Office and was there when Scott and Nadine started dating and fell in love. He really loved being a husband and father and was so proud of his family. What a terrible loss to you and all his many friends for such a wonderful man to die so young.

Gosh, I just really liked Scott! Yes we haggled over budget and other related issues but he was always fair and really a lot of fun to work with. We both retired and hardly saw each other, too bad. Did I say how much I liked him! May God hold his family tight and protect them forever.

I worked with Scott for many years so I was so sorry to read of his passing. We shared many a story, many a laugh, and many a budget spreadsheet. Always a great person and one I was honored to call a friend. We lost contact as happens after retirement. Prayers to his family.

  17. James & Elly Driggers says

    February 26, 2021 at 3:59 pm

Scott and his family were next door neighbors for a while. We loved them being here; they were among the best neighbors we’ve ever had. James also worked with Scott at DPHHS, and enjoyed stopping by his office for a visit every once in a while. Scott always had a quick smile and some funny story about his kids. Scott was always so proud of his family as they prepared and marched down the street on their annual Fourth of July neighborhood parade. Scott was a good man and we are saddened by his passing, especially at such a young age. We will miss him.
Our thoughts are with your family and hope that the good memories will help you through this time.
