Shauna Sue Smith, 52, passed away of natural causes on September 2nd in her Helena home.
Shauna was born August 8th, 1959, to Curtis and Maribeth Smith in Malta, Montana and was the eldest of four children.
Her father worked for the US Forest Service, and the family moved many times throughout her childhood; from Washington D.C. to Alaska and California, and a few states in between. She spent every year of high school in a different school, and graduated from Ygnacio Valley High School in California. After high school, she attended MSU and graduated from the University of Montana with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She worked in Missoula at the Bon Marche and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Helena before moving to Hawaii in 1998, where she worked for Blue Shield of Hawaii in Honolulu. In 2005, she returned to Helena where she worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield for a time. Shauna was an avid reader, and could usually be found curled up with a cat and a good book. She also enjoyed beading and embroidery, at which she was very talented.
She had a passion for felines. As the treasurer for the Helena Area Friends of Pets, she was devoted to the welfare of animals. She was a loving sister, an easy-going daughter, a doting aunt, and a loyal friend. Her laugh was infectious, her heart always open, and she was a cherished member of our family, whose memory fills us with warmth.
Survivors include her parents Maribeth Smith of Helena, and Curtis Smith of Manchester, Ga.; brothers, Scott Smith(Jackie) of Helena, Ed Smith of Missoula; sister, Holly Smith of Butte; nieces, Kailey Smith of Missoula, and Courtney Smith of Helena and a nephew Colton Smith of Helena.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, September 12th at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home. A private burial of Shauna will be at the East Helena Cemetery. Memorials in Shauna’s name are suggested to the Lewis & Clark Humane Society P.O. Box 4455 Helena, Montana 59604. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.aswfuneralhome.com.

Shauna was a wonderful host to a friend and I when we traveled to Hawaii in 1999. She met us at the airport and took us to see beautiful kites on the other side of the island from Honolulu. We enjoyed dinner together and really appreciated the tour. Shauna was such a sweet gal. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I am so sorry to hear of Shauna’s passing. I went to school with her at Helena High during our Junior year. We hung out a bit and both found a friend at a new high school. I remember Shauna having a wonderful spirit and an easy smile. I am sorry I did not know she had returned to Helena. I would have so enjoyed getting back together again. I am sure she will be sorely missed. My condolences to your family.
