Shirley Mae Bertrand, 89, of Helena MT (formerly of Three Forks, MT) passed away quietly at Cooney Healthcare on the morning of October 10, 2024. She was born in Three Forks, MT on January 13, 1935 to F. Edward and Marjorie Scanlan.
Shirley grew up in Three Fork, graduating from Three Forks High. She met and married Milton R. Bertrand in Three Forks. After marrying in 1954, they made their home in Butte, MT until Milton passed away in 1963. They had three children Howard, Elaine, and Ray. They also had a baby daughter that passed away at birth.
Shirley and the three children moved back to Three Forks after the passing of Milton. Her parents operated the Headwater’s Café in Three Forks. Shirley did the bookkeeping, serving and cooking for a number of years with them. She also worked a couple of tax seasons for the Montana Department of Revenue in late 1990s.
She moved to Helena in 2006 to be closer to her daughter. She became a member of the Foster Grandparent Program for several years working with preschool children.
After moving to Helena, Shirley became a member of the Cathedral of St. Helena. She was very strong in her Catholic faith and enjoyed going to masses at the Cathedral.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Howard (Kathy) Bertrand, Arlington, WA, Ray Bertrand, Marysville, WA and daughter, Elaine Bertrand of Helena, MT; grandsons, Derek, Helena and Zak, Marysville, WA and several great grandchildren. Also, five nieces and nephews and their families.
She is preceded in death by her parents, F. Edward and Marjorie (Haas) Scanlan; sisters, Lois “Mickey” Jevning, Sharon Shanholtzer and Edith Scanlan; husband, Milton Bertrand; infant daughter, and grandson, Cody R. Bertrand.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at the Cathedral of St. Helena, 530 N. Ewing Street. Burial will be at 4:00 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Three Forks, MT.
