Shirley Magdalena Burner, 74, died early Wednesday morning at St. Peter’s Hospital after a long and courageous battle with a series of ailments which plagued her for the last three years of her life.
Shirley was born June 2, 1938 in Bismarck, N.D., the youngest of 12 children of Adolf and Pauline Weigum and the only one of the siblings born in a hospital. She took great pride in the fact she was a North Dakota farm girl.
After graduating from Bismarck High School, Shirley enrolled in beauty school in Butte. On completion in 1957 she took her first job at Haytin’s Beauty Salon on 6th Avenue in downtown Helena. She met Morris Burner and they were married in August of 1958. Two sons were born, Ron, who lives in Missoula, and Jeff of Helena. The family moved to Utah and later to California before returning to Helena in 1979, living here ever since.
Shirley was preceded in death by her father and mother; sisters Eleanor Weigum, Gertha Pfenning, Alma Summer, Gladys Schauer, Carol Shaw and Sally Speidel; brothers Raymond Weigum and Leonard Weigum.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Morris; sons, Ron and Jeff; sisters Leona Jurgens & Hertha Reinhardt, brother Clifford Weigum, brother in law Max Burner (Belen), Helena nieces, Maxine Collins (Jim), Jeri Matthews (Ed), Maria Bachmeier (Chad); Helena nephew, Douglas Burner (Val). In addition, there are numerous nieces and nephews in North Dakota, Utah, Idaho, Colorado and Anchorage, Alaska.
Shirley requested that no funeral services be held. A memorial will be scheduled later in the spring. Memorials can be made on her behalf to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Jeff, Morris, Ron; I didn’t have the honor of meeting your mother and wife but I feel I knew her through her son Jeff. It’s not so much what we did or who we are but what people think of us. It is therefore that I know Shirley was a wonderful wife and mother. She is in a happier place and you will all be together again one day. Bless you all.
