In Memory Of

Steven “Steve” Richard Conrady, age 70, of Helena, formerly of Anaconda

July 4, 1944 – July 27, 2014

Steve was born in Anaconda on July 4th 1944 to parents Louis and Ruth Conrady.   Growing up in Anaconda he played in the foothills behind the family home on West Sixth Street.  Most his lifelong friends were planted from there.

School took Steve away to Havre for drafting where he met his partner for life Sandi.  Following marriage and the birth of their first child, Stephanie, Steve decided that teaching would be his life passion and pursued a Master’s in Education from WMC.  Scot was born and a perfect family of four was set in motion.  For thirty years, Steve taught at his Alma Marta, Anaconda High school, teaching all vocational studies along with history and other courses.  The lifestyle of teaching suited Steve completely and he was a natural at bringing the mystery out of small engine mechanics or any other course he taught.  He was honored twice as being selected as Most Influential Teacher by graduating students of MSU.  Steve’s family and friends spent many hours skiing, camping, hunting, snowmobiling, and fishing. Playing the guitar and singing songs around the campfire was his forte at any outing.  Many weekends he devoted to serving with the Montana National Guard.   He retired after 20 years. Living in Helena these past 15 years, he added his love for horses to his retirement.  Returning to his roots, he, along with, family and friends, built a cabin at Georgetown Lake.

To know Scuba Steve was to love him.  His gift was giving, loving, teaching and performing these skills by treating all people with respect and kindness.  Survivors include his wife Sandi, son and daughter Scot and Stephanie, brother Doug (Bobbi), sister Penny (Gabe) Rueben, brother and sister-in-law George and Judy Meyer, brother-in-law DP, grandchildren Troy(Michelle), Martel, Drew, and Brooke and many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers the family has set up an account for the Conrady grandchildren college fund at Valley Bank, 3030 N. Montana Ave., Helena, MT 59601 or Glacier Bank, 307 East Park St., Anaconda, MT 59711.

Dear Sandi, Steph, and Scott and family
It may sound cliché but I feel strongly that Steve Conrady made this world a better place with his humor, storytelling, warmth and a smile that would light up a room. I benefitted from Steve’s positive qualities both in my teaching and National Guard careers. I could be a little too serious at times and Steve had a way of lightening up the situation. God Bless.

    Dear Sandi, Steph, and Scott,
Steve was truly an inspiration! While teaching together he inspired colleagues and students. He motivated me to be a better archer, and we shared competitions as well as hunting/fishing stories. Sharon and I have great memories of the pinochle parties and how we laughed until we cried.
Steve’s friendly smile/nature will be missed but awesome memories of him live on.

I am so sorry to hear of such a loss! He was one of the greatest teachers I ever had! He was quite inspiring and gave me such confidence that I could do great things, even if I was one of the only girls doing it. He will be greatly missed!

I am proud to say I was one of those neighborhood guys who had a lot of good times with Steve in those foothills behind sixth Street as I lived a half a block up from Steve and his parents on Walnut Street. Steve was the real deal when it came to friendliness and openness to being a true friend. He will be missed by everyone who ever had the privilege of knowing him. As was the case with many families from Anaconda my mother and father were good friends with Steve’s parents and as such I too became a friend of his after returning to Anaconda in the 8th grade to finish my under graduate schooling.

Saw this quote below and made me think of Steve. He certainly did “beat” cancer by living to his upmost…right to the end. He fought a good fight.
Stuart Scott of ESPN is in the middle of his own fight with cancer. He said it best during a moving speech after he accepted the 2014 Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs.
“When you die, that does not mean you lose to cancer,” he said. “You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live. So live. Live. Fight like hell and when you get too tired to fight then lay down and rest and let somebody else fight for you.”

    Sandi, Steph, & Scott,
Please accept my most sincere condolences. Steve was a great friend & we shared so many wonderful adventures, plus a couple misadventures, but they are all precious memories. From little Jeeps & Broncos to dirt bikes, ducks & pheasants to deer, elk, and moose, we had a time. Steve will be sorely missed & you are all in my prayers. He made the world a better place just by being in it. May God bless you all during this difficult time.
