On February 21, 2012 Theresa (Nistler) Colley passed into the loving arms of our Lord. She was Joe and Roxie Nistler’s fifth child in a family of eight. On July 4, 1980, Theresa was born at St. Peter’s Hospital. The fireworks that marked her entrance were an indication of the person she would become.
Theresa possessed an enthusiasm and zest for life that spread contagiously to all those around her. Her quick smile and laugh filled a room with energy to live life to the fullest. Local hikers could hear her delightful squeals as she screamed down the Helena bike trails or could find her tearing up the slopes of Big Sky. Theresa seized every opportunity to see and live the beauty of life.
In 2004, Theresa was diagnosed with Leukemia (AML). After a desperate fight lasting six months, she miraculously recovered to add seven adventurous years to her life. She competed in multiple triathlons and scaled mountains in Montana, Peru and Alaska. The greatest adventure awaited her when she married John Colley in 2008. Theresa and John honeymooned skiing in the French Alps. In 2010, the couple traveled to New Zealand for a year, but were cut short by the arrival of twin girls, Anya and Colette. Theresa and John knew these girls were an incredible gift from God; after the intense chemotherapy Theresa received it was unlikely she could bear children.
While training for a Half Ironman in June 2011, Theresa’s leukemia relapsed. After exhausting all possible treatments, she was sent home to enjoy her last days. Eight days before she died, Theresa and John taught their 2-year-old twins how to ski at Discovery. The days that preceded her passing were spent at St. Peter’s Hospital with John, the twins, and her family. Upon entering the room one could find Theresa and the twins playing hide-and-seek under a blanket or roaring like lions. Giggles, squeals and animal noises escaped from her bedroom to delight the ears of the nurses and doctors. Anya and Colette were her greatest joy.
Theresa’s pure and beautiful soul will be remembered and missed by all who loved her. She is survived by her husband, John Colley; twin daughters, Anya and Colette; parents, Joe and Roxie Nistler; and siblings: Allison (Shannon) Bell; Gabe (Sommer) Nistler; Matt (Carolyn) Nistler; Maria (Pat) Leahy; Ben Nistler, Margaret (Alex) Frei, and Joey Nistler; as well as 20 nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend a thank you to Dr. Tom Weiner and his Oncology Department at St. Peter’s Hospital for their hard work and special friendships.
There will be a rosary prayed at St. Helena Cathedral Monday, February 27th at 11:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the Brondel Center.
In lieu of flowers, please go enjoy the great outdoors as Theresa would have loved. But if you feel compelled, donations will be accepted in Anya and Colette’s name at Mountain West Bank. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.aswfuneralhome.com

Anya (8) and Xander (11) had the incredible privilege of having Theresa (and sometimes John) as a baby sitter for the summer several years ago. They still talk about her as their absolute most favorite sitter ever. We love that one of Theresa’s daughters has our daughter’s name, too. Theresa brought such incredible joy to our household and she had the most amazing sparkle in her eyes. It is amazing that the sun still comes up when it seems as though time should stand still in the midst of our grief. How do we question a loving Father in whom we put our trust? We know that Heaven is rejoicing, but we are still here and living and breathing and MUST continue to live each day. This will not be an easy walk for all of you, but you will survive one day and minute at a time. Give each other grace to grieve in their own way, without time limits. Let our Lord hold you in His Loving Arms. Peace to your family. Joanie Werner
