Tom Schultz, 68, of Clancy died February 2, 2015 of an apparent heart attack. Tom was born in Idaho Falls, ID, and grew up in Salmon, ID, where he developed what would be a lifetime fascination with the physical sciences. He parlayed that fascination into a career in mining, a vocation that took him all over the Rocky Mountains, including mines in Kellogg, ID; Hanna, WY; and various locales in Montana.
His myriad interests included mountaineering, black powder rifles, woodworking, RC planes, and music. If he wasn’t tinkering in his shop or jamming on his upright bass with friends, he was probably lost in a good book. He will be greatly missed, but as he would like to say, things look more like they do now than they did before.
Tom is survived by his longtime partner Barb Piccolo of Helena, as well as by his beloved daughters Julie Schultz of New York and Ellen (Jon) Wilson of Billings and grandchildren Maggie and Teddy Wilson. He is also survived by his three younger brothers – Steve Schultz of Post Falls, ID; Clinton Schultz of Spokane, WA; and Ted Schultz of Fairfield, MT – and dear friend Louisa Frank of Billings. Survivors also include two that were like his own children, John (Paige) Piccolo of Clancy and Eliysheva Kohen of Helena, and their children.
A family receiving friends service will be held 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 8th at Retz Funeral Home, 315 E. 6th Ave. A memorial service for Tom will be held in late July. Memorials in Tom’s name may be made to the Lost & Foundation, 517 Kinght St., Helena, MT 59601 or to the Prickly Pear Land Trust, 21 N. Last Chance Gulch, Helena, MT 59601. Off on another adventure you old scoundrel, loved you to bits neighbour, pal and friend,
up Wardner in the 70’s. How many times in this life does one know such as you and camp
in the snow on a mountain top in January, Just once. Travel light, joy and love are enough.
You live with us always.

I first met Tom when he was 14 and he arived at Mount Ellis Academy from Salmon, ID. We worked togather on the school farm and became good friends. We were in school togather through college and kept in touch through the years. We had a real nice visit at a class reunion ot MEA in 2013 and I was looking forward to seeing him again this April. He was a good friend and he had a very kind heart. He will be missed.

Tom and I were school mates at Mt Ellis Academy. I enjoyed knowing him as a teenager and only wish that we could have had another chance to reconnect. A good friend who will be missed.

Tom and I were at Mt. Ellis together and I will always remember his kind happy smile and continencey. I was honored that he stoped and visited with me this past fall on his way back to Clancey. My heart hurts for you who are left and pray that you will have peace and comfort in this time of your loss. We loved Tom.

I had the pleasure of playing music with Tom at some of our Tuesday night jams. There was nothing about Tom that wasn’t to like. I will remember Tom as the guy that would help keep us in sync (no trifle achievement) and as a “really nice fella”.

Dear Family my deepest condolences. God gives us the strength needed at such difficult times. Through the many Bible promises we are sustained and fortified. One of my favorite is found at Revelation 21:4: “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”
Again my deepest sympathy

Dear Barb and family, my condolences to you all. I had the privilege to play music with Tom in Columbus and Gardiner and I will forever remember and hold it in my heart. He educated me many times with his never ending knowledge…and sipping on his homemade “Grog”. Heaven has a new bass player for sure and some day we’ll play “The song that never ends” again. Rest in peace big guy, you will be missed.

I met Tom over 30 years ago in Hanna and we shared a few beers and lots of laughs.

Tom was a great employee and a good friend. Tom took longer to answer a question than anyone I have met in 73 years. Never sure if the conversation had ended or was just getting started!!! Any one whose life was touched by Tom was richer for it! I look forward to the time our spirits touch each other again. Marty

So sad, I was just thinking about Tom (it’s 2024) and decided to google his name. I met Tom in 1997 when I was in consulting and working at Montana Tunnels mine. He was a great mentor and always had a story or joke to tell. I still have the ’round tuit’ that he gave me with a grin 25 years ago. I’ll miss him.
