Vida O’Neal, age 96, of Helena

Vida was born in Helena, Montana on November 23, 1918 to Robert and Ruby Browne. She grew up on a homestead seven miles from Craig with her grandparents, parents and sister. She attended the seven mile one-room school for grades one through eight then on to Craig for high school.

Vida worked at Mrs. Maws general mercantile for a year or two before moving to Helena and next she went on to San Diego where she worked at Consolidated Air Craft during WWII building B-24 bombers. As the war wound down, Vida joined the Cadet Nurses Corp and was sent to the Bethel School of Nursing in Colorado Springs for training. Upon graduation she returned to Helena and was employed at the Veterans Hospital at Fort Harrison for the next 30 years.

Vida married George O’Neal on December 30, 1953 and built a home on Willow Street in Woodlawn adjacent to her parents’ home. They were able to spend many happy hours fishing together.

Vida belonged to the Toastmasters Club, she took classes in water color and china painting and was very professional in both. Vida traveled extensively through the western states, especially California, Arizona, and even made it to the World’s Fair in Seattle.  She visited Arkansas and Minnesota and cruised to Alaska and Mexico.

For nearly ten years, Touchmark has been her home.

A Graveside service will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Montana State Veterans Cemetery, Fort Harrison, Montana.
