Obituary Vincent A. Holmquist
Vincent “Vince” Holmquist passed away at Big Sky Care Center in Helena on January 15, 2012. He was 94 years old at the time of his passing. Vince was born on May 23, 1917 in Lismore, Minnesota.
He is survived by wife of 66 years, Ida Mae Holmquist; son, Marvin Holmquist of Clancy, MT; daughter, Cheryl (Jim) Lay, Helena; and daughter-in-law, Nel Holmquist of Denver, Colorado. Vincent is also survived by a brother, Elof Holmquist of St. Paul, Minnesota. Other survivors include three granddaughters, two grandsons, five great-granddaughters, one great-grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas, his parents, and seven brothers and sisters.
Vince spent most of his youth working on several farms in Minnesota and eventually enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corp, where he learned many of the construction skills he used his entire life. He served in the United States Army as an infantryman during WWII and was a member of the Montana National Guard, attaining the rank of sergeant-major until his retirement. Upon returning from active duty, he was self-employed and formed the Holmquist Construction Company in Sidney, MT. He later accepted a position with the Montana National Guard as a facilities maintenance supervisor for Guard units throughout Montana.
He was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Helena. A memorial service is scheduled to take place at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 23, 2012 at Plymouth Congregational Church, 400 South Oakes. A reception will be held at the church following the service and a graveside service with military honors will follow at Montana State Veterans Cemetery, Fort Harrison.
