On March 27th, 2013 heaven received Vincent E. Maddio after sharing his final hours in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. Vince was born to Louis Pio Maddio and Ingeborg Larcinca Hovland Maddio on December 17th, 1938 in Billings, MT. Vince was raised in Red Lodge, Montana along with his sister Anna, and brothers Jack and Gary. In 1953, the family moved to Helena, MT where Vince attended and graduated Helena High School in 1957.
The next year, Vince entered the US Navy and proudly served his country while aboard the USS Henry W. Tucker, a Navy Destroyer. Vince was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1962. Little did anyone know that the Navy would have such a profound impact on Vince’s future business endeavors. While serving in the Navy, Vince’s entrepreneurial spirit blossomed and he seized the opportunity to learn to be a barber, and taking advantage to earn additional income from the Navy’s rigid hair standards.
Shortly after to returning to Helena in 1962, Vince married the love of his life and true soul-mate Jerry Ann Casey on August 4th, 1962 at St. Cyril & Methodius Church in East Helena. Vince and Jerry raised three children, Vincent Jerry (VJ), Colette and Susie.
Vince’s business career began in 1962 when he opened Stylers Beauty Salon, the first of three salons in the Helena area. In 1966, Vince founded Maddio’s Hairstyling and Cosmetology College which he operated until his retirement in 2000. It was at this location where Vince had the ability to provide education and career opportunities for over 1,000 aspiring cosmetologists. Vince was always known for his sincere compassion and worked successfully to navigate his students to graduation and placement in salons throughout the state. Vince became a leader in Cosmetology Education and was appointed to The National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences. Vince traveled the county ensuring that schools conformed to the NACCAS standards of quality education. Vince also used his college to provide haircuts to anyone, regardless of ability to pay. Vince understood how a haircut can create such a unique and profound impact on one’s self confidence. He wanted everyone to walk out of his business with this sense of self confidence and loved to share this gift with members of God’s Love, Alcoholics Anonymous, and for community members with special needs.
Vince was an active member of Saint Mary Catholic Community, and volunteered his time and knowledge of his Savior by way of Cursillo, Prison Ministries, Life in the Spirit, as a Eucharistic Minister, and served on the Parish Counsel. He understood the importance of giving back to his community and Vince provided his time and talents as Police Commissioner and as an active member of non-profit groups such as The Knights of Columbus, The BPOE, Ducks Unlimited and The Helena Exchange Club.
Vince had a love for people and for life. Vince will be forever remembered for his genuine smile and the life-long lessons he shared through his words and actions. He enjoyed life to the fullest and could be found loving the outdoors as an avid hunter, competition skeet shooter, fisherman, boater, runner, skier and golfer. His true passion however, was his love of his wife and family.
Vince was preceded in death by his parents Pio and Ingeborg, and his sisters Mary Ann Maddio and Anna McGraw. Vince is survived by his wife Jerry, brothers Jack Maddio (Judy) of Minnesota, and Gary Maddio (Suzanne) of Ohio, son VJ Maddio (Maureen), and daughters Colette Strizich (Tom) and Susie Cucciardi (Shawn). In addition, Vince is survived by his treasured grandchildren Megan, Jerrod and Cassidy Maddio, Adam and Noah Strizich, and Calli and Caden Cucciardi.
The family extends a special blessing to the many people involved with Vince’s care. This includes his loving friends and those special angels associated with Nightingale Nursing Care and Hospice of St. Peter’s Hospital. Donations can be made in Vince’s memory to Hospice of St. Peter’s Hospital and Helena Food Share.
We love you Papa!

I attended Maddios the last year it was open. Vince told me I had the honor of being his last student. I have great memories of the time I spent there and got to know Vince and Jerri. Their doors were always open. Vince had a great wealth of knowledge that he shared freely. I will always be grateful for everything he taught me, not just about cosmetology, but about life. My thoughts and prayers are with Jerri and his family.

I am so sorry to hear of Vince’s passing. He was an amazing person in so many ways. When Susie and I were hanging out, I became very close to the entire Maddio family, and learned so much from them. I remember telling myself when I was just 16, that “I want to be just like Susie’s dad when I have kids”. I will always remember that fantastic smile, the twinkle in his eyes and the kindness that absolutely poured out of him. I know for a fact, that he made a huge impact on the type of father I became, and the relationship I have with my kids. Thank you Vince!! I Love you guys, and will keep you in my prayers. _Glenn

“The crown is round and 2/3rds of the head, place comb, place finger rotate comb move the hair”, just two of the many things I will never forget from Maddio’s Beauty College. I was lucky to get to know Vince and Jerry while I was in school, and this friendship has endured for many years with so many great memories. Vince was a wonderful mentor for me when I started my career in cosmetology. I will always remember fondly his smile and welcoming remark to everyone, “Hey Bud how are you?” Jerry, VJ, Colette and Suzie my heart is with you in this time of grief….and always with you in friendship.

Aunt Jerry, VJ, Colette, & Susie: We enjoy so many memories of Vince and your whole family. When we visited Helena as kids we always had such a great time. You were great hosts and enjoyed living life fully – something I believe both Vince and Jerry bestowed on the family. Uncle Vince’s energy, cheerfulness, and love were traits that we could always count on experiencing. Vince’s leadership in the community, in his faith walk, and as part of the family set him apart. We all know that even now he’s dancing with angels and experiecing a joy that we can’t even begin to fathom.
You are all in our prayers as are the numerous grandchildren and others who Uncle Vince touched.
Sheila sends her love and prayers as well.
Love – John

Back in the 50’s, Vince worked at Safeway and I was a box boy, my very first job. He took me under his wing and was patient and kind in showing me the most mundane tasks. He taught me how to sweep a floor properly (yes, there is a technique to it) and I’ve never forgotten it. To this day, every time I sweep a floor I think of my first my very first mentor.
Lynn Startin says
Dear Jerry and Family
Vince was such an influence on me! I was a young school owner and Vince not only took me under his wing but coached to also participate in the evaluating of schools. He was a friend and a mentor! I will think of him often and when I do I will smile!

To the entire Maddio family we extend our heartfelt sympathy and love. Vince was a wonderful man and always made whoever was around feel like part of the family. He always remembered all of our names, even if it had been quite a while since last we were together. May you always know that he is in a very special place in Heaven, one set aside for those who shared their love with everyone, no matter what their station in life was.

vince and i go way back. i worked for him in his second opened salon as a new hairdresser. we later decided to train each other to become instructors for his future beauty school. we worked together and covered his salon activities. i learned so much from vince and being a close friend. later on when i married, he helped me establish a connection to beauty supply for opening my own salon in helena. vince was always so helpful to anyone wanting to go out on their own. those were good times watching jerry and her kids starting out their young family. i do miss those days. marty

Sharon Holmquist-Mercado says
Dear Jerry, VJ, Colette, and Susie, I’m so sorry for your loss of Vince. He was such a wonderful man, so cheerful and happy. I used to get my hair cut at Maddio’s Cosmotology College. At times he would cut my hair if the student hadn’t done it to his liking. He usually greeted people as he walked around. What a special man who will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Stephanie Rains Kaul-Townsend says
I was a student of Vince’s 67-68. I have had a gradifying career for 46 years because of the basics I learned from Vince and Mrs. Finch. I’m in Casper now and have been awarded 17 trips in 18 years with Regis . Including ones to Portugal and Rome. I have always been so thankful for the education I received at Maddio’s. Some of my fondest memories are of those days. One noon Jerry walked in the back room just as Vince was pulling a long hair out of his sandwich. He remarked”alittle piece of hair doesn’t bother us does it Stephanie” with that big grin of his. May God Bless you all. As ever Stephanie
