Vivian Genevieve Sigety Carter, a beacon of strength, love, and unwavering spirit, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her cherished family, on August 23, 2024. Born on November 22, 1931, in White Butte, South Dakota, Vivian was the beloved daughter of Joseph and Ruth Sigety. Her family’s journey led them to Helena, Montana, in 1937—a place Vivian proudly called home for the rest of her life.
Vivian’s early years were marked by resilience and adaptability, qualities she carried throughout her life. As a young girl, she experienced the vibrant changes brought by World War II, witnessing her family’s move to Spokane, WA, and their subsequent return to Helena with the end of the war. It was in Helena where Vivian’s heart and home flourished.
In 1950, Vivian married Jack Carter, who passed before her in 1970. As a single mother, Vivian raised her children with a blend maternal love, sheer determination, and affection. Her legacy as a mother, sister, aunt, and friend is a testament to her nurturing spirit and huge impact on those around her.
Vivian found a second family in the Women of the Moose, where she dedicated herself with passion and commitment, ascending to the role of Sr. Regent. Her influence and leadership were felt deeply as she welcomed over 50 new members into the fold, fostering a strong sense of community and camaraderie.
Vivian worked diligently for Sweetheart Bread for over two decades, earning the affectionate nickname “Sweet Buns” and a beloved CB handle. Her vibrant personality was evident in every aspect of her life—from her playful competitiveness in card games and dice to her unwavering kindness and generosity.
Grandma Viv was the heart of her family, doting on her 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many who were “adopted” into her circle of love. Her warmth extended beyond biological ties, embracing friends and acquaintances alike, always ready with an open table and an open heart.
Vivian believed in togetherness, often saying, “The more, the merrier.” She cherished every opportunity to cook, bake, can, and travel, with special fondness for her drives to Lincoln, MT and Spokane, WA, to spend time with those she loved. Her genuine hospitality and vibrant spirit made everyone feel welcomed and valued.
Vivian was a proud and lifelong member of the Helena Cathedral, where her faith was deeply rooted from her early years attending Catholic grade school both in Helena and Spokane. Her steadfast belief and reliance on prayer guided her through countless challenges and tribulations throughout her life. In her final year, she was blessed to be a resident at Edgewood Senior Living, where she found comfort and companionship in her friendship with Joan O’Brien, her newest friend and roommate. Vivian’s faith and friendships were sources of strength and joy, illuminating her path with grace and love.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Ruth Sigety; her five brothers—Walter, Leo, Royal, Allie and Herb; her sister, Lorraine Dunlap; her husband, Jack Carter; and her eldest son, Jackie Deon Carter. She is survived by her sons John Carter (Cindy) and Joseph Carter (Julia), as well as her daughters Linda McClure; Ruth Sexton (Tom); Vicki Carter (Greg Ranniger); Anita Emerson (Donald); and Amy Neely (John) and daughter-in-law Lynnette Nilan (Tom). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Annette Carter; Tony Carter (Joey); Jennifer Bergum Swartz (Jon); Melanie Bergum Dayton (John); Amber McClure Jensen (Cody); Chase Carter; Tara Carter Opheim; Kayla Carter Northrop; Kasey Carter Parlet (Zach); Lauren Parriman Smith (Shawn); Benny Parriman; Michael Carter Miller; Sadie Gibbs; and Emily Chambers.
Vivian will be remembered for her endearing love, generosity, and the profound joy she brought to every life she touched. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her, as a true exemplar of kindness, strength, and familial devotion. Rest in peace, dear Vivian.

We grew up 2 doors down from the Carters. Viv was always looking out for all of us kids in the neighborhood. She had a quick smile, encouraging words, or a no-BS tone – whichever was most needed. Heaven definitely gained one of the best angels. My condolences to her enormous extended family for the loss of their amazing matriarch.

Carter Family,
We are saddened to hear about Vivian. She was such a beautiful woman, inside and out. She was a very dear friend to our Mom Dorothy. Grief is so hard, but when it is a Mom or Dad, the pain is almost unbearable. Your Mom was a woman of faith. She is probably hanging out with Dorothy and Hank. I have no doubt she will be watching over you all, and you will know because of the love you in your hearts you have for your Mom. God Bless her soul and God Bless each one of you. Sending hugs from Hamilton.

Carter Family, So many memories growing up across the street from Vivian. She would always say Hello when out in the front yard. She hosted my baby shower at her house. Trips to the ‘bread store’ were always a delight to see her. She would play at mom’s card parties. I always thought Vivian was an incredible strong woman. I will never not see the house on Leslie and think of her…or when I drive by the old bread store.
I’m so sorry for the family’s loss. I hope she is playing cards with my mom…..
Amy Budke says
Oh Gramma Viv! What an incredible woman. I first met her at the Sweetheart Bakery. My Grandma would take me there after fetching me from kindergarten. Vivian would give me a snoopy sticker and a hug. It’s been a blessing to know the Carter family through the years and experience all of the strength, grit, love, and devotion she infused into each family member. My deepest wishes for Viv’s family and dear friends-a peaceful journey on your grief path.
