William (Bill) Llewellyn Knott 2-25-29
Bill was born on February 25th, 1929 in Tomahawk, WI to Helen Collette & Llewellyn (Louie) Knott. He was the oldest of 11 children. His childhood was spent in Pine River, MN.
At the age of 17 he took his first job in Minneapolis harvesting vegetable gardens. His natural leadership skills quickly became apparent. In 1948 he signed up to join the Army. Before doing so he removed all the change from his pockets, and threw it down the street. He reported his reasoning was he wanted to “Go in broke, in case he came out broke, so he wouldn’t have lost anything.” Bill was sent to Fort Ord, CA for basic training. From there he was sent to Japan, then on to Korea. Bill fought on the front lines for 11 months. He received an honorable discharge in 1951 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his time spent serving his country, he moved to Spirit Lake, Idaho with his Aunt Elsie and Uncle George Eystad. He worked with his uncle on construction sites as a laborer. Bill spent the next 50 years as a skilled union carpenter. He spent 20 of those years at A & B construction in Helena, MT as a superintendant. Bill worked on the construction of Helena High School, The Federal Building, Urban Renewal, Helena Regional Airport, and numerous other buildings.
In 1953, Bill met Carolyn (Stauner). Thus began their 65 year love story. They wed May 1st, 1954 and had 3 children: Bill Jr., Kathy, and Ann Marie. His love for his family and his friends was always first and foremost. He would work long days but never be too tired to take care of his children or lend a helping hand to someone who needed it.
Bill had numerous hobbies he truly enjoyed. Most notably hunting, fishing, cutting firewood (he had a firewood pile that was the envy of many), and woodworking.
Bill passed away peacefully on October 9th 2019 with family members by his side. He is survived by his 3 brothers David (Olga), Sam (Carolyn), and Joe (Jan) and 4 sisters, Marie, Doris, Bernice, and Hope. His children Bill Jr. (Nancy), Kathy, Ann Marie (Bill) and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
