William (Bill) Loomis, a man of quiet strength passed away on December 12, 2024, at the age of 70. Born on May 12, 1954, in Butte, Montana, he grew up in Havre, where he graduated high school. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Germany where he met and married his first wife Philomena Neugebauer. After returning to Montana he settled in Havre where he attended Northern Montana College and studied design leading to his employment at the Department of Transportation. His work reflected his methodical precision, even if it meant making his family detour on vacation to admire one of his roads—while grumbling about the inconsistencies in the execution.
On August 16, 1986, he married Carol Friede. Together, they spent their weekend nights playing cards with friends. Bill enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, golfing, and bowling.
A twice cancer survivor, he met life’s challenges with determination and resilience. He once hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon despite never learning to swim, embodying his stubborn resolve. He always seemed to play his cards close; you could never quite tell what he was thinking, but every move he made seemed well thought out and strategic. Stubborn in his beliefs however he remained open to changing his mind when warranted, a quality admired by many.
With his desire to stay active and contribute to his community, he volunteered at Food Share and was a ranger for Bill Roberts Golf Course into his retirement years. During retirement, he also found a love of legos and puzzles, highlighting his sharp mind, attention to detail, and desire to keep things orderly.
He is survived in death by children: Sandra, Trevor, Kendra, and Michael and grandchildren: Kayla, Xavie, Liam, and Lincoln, and his sister Trish. He is preceded in death by his parents: William and Dorothy and siblings: Mary and Kathy.
He might not have always lit up any room he walked into, but he was always on the sidelines, encouraging with steadfast pride and support. Bill proudly displayed his family’s accomplishments and talents, covering his walls with their successes. We will deeply miss his determined spirit and the unassuming way he made their lives better every single day.
A memorial service will be held at The Muni’s Restaurant at Bill Roberts Golf Course, 2201 N Benton Ave, Helena, MT, on January 3, 2025, from 1 to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lincoln Project, honoring his military oath to defend the written constitution.

Just so sad to lose a good friend and golfing buddy. Bill always encouraged me on the golf course. I would chuckle when I’d miss a putt as I’d hear “ohhhhh” slip out of his mouth. I’m really going to miss hearing that. I’m really going to miss you Bill.
