Wyatt Todd Winfield…Buddy, Peanut, Wylie, Mini, Peep, and Honey, you came into this world in the pre-dawn hours of November 16th, 1993. You were early, little, strong and pushy. You spent the rest of your days being late, little, strong, and pushy. We, Jay Todd Winfield and Brigitte Bellefleur-Winfield welcomed you with open arms, as you were much planned for and wanted. You were without a doubt the best thing to happen in both our lives.
In the pre-dawn hours of March 15th, 2013 you were taken just as quickly…in a tragic accident. We thank the Lord that Dillon’s life was spared. We thank the Lord that alcohol, drugs, or speed were not a factor. You were a young man who made mostly good choices. Thank you so much.
We always knew you were loved by family….Papa (Harold “Fuzz” Winfield and Maggie); Grandma and Grandpa (Christa and Philip Bellefleur) of Steilacoom, WA; Auntie Jill (Mike Mosure) of Billings; Lois Phernetton of Tacoma, WA; and EVERY Winfield that lives in Helena.
What is more incredible, are the hundreds of people who loved you for the wonderful person and friend you were. You acquired lifelong relationships when you started school at Radley Elementary in East Helena, continuing at East Valley Middle School and then keeping us all in suspense but graduating from Helena High in 2012. It was at Helena High that you furthered your talent for welding and metal fabrication, first introduced to you by Dad. We were only three weeks away from ordering your Plasma Cam.
Just recently you said, the “Priest Pass Mud” incident was one of the best things that ever happened to you, for it was through that experience that you met all the cross town kids and the Diesel Truck/Coal Rolling adventures really began, your truck ‘Denny’ was such a part of your culture.
Your times in Hunting Camp (Meat Management); up Crystal Creek and Priest Pass; out on the Coast….dreaming of becoming a Coast Guard Helicopter Pilot, Deep Sea fishing, Pike’s Place Market or just being on the water were all times well spent with family and friends.
You were an accomplished cowboy, having already covered miles in the back country riding tandem, by age four, on your special (Vision Quest) mule, Mork. You always had at least one dog, usually more, and you tried your hand at sheep riding for a spell.
All 5’7”, 170 pounds of you was tough as nails with a heart bigger than most. The only thing to rival the size of your heart was the size of your smile. All we can say is WOW. That smile got you out of a few jams! Your personality and smile also got you the attention of the girls, but recently your heart was fully committed to just one.
You were introduced to sports that would become your passion early in life. At age two you were more intrigued by the “ice tractor” (Zamboni) than the actual Ice Pirates Hockey Games, yet we strapped on skates that same year and you began playing hockey by age four. Following in Dad’s footsteps….baseball became an immediate rival as your favorite. You excelled at both over the years, playing numerous elite teams due to your exceptional athleticism, dedication, and hustle. Traveling throughout Montana, to numerous other states and into Canada…we never again owned a vehicle with low miles.
You eventually tendered with the Bighorns, where you were determined to stay. Your love was to play for the Helena Bighorns and Coach Scott Cunningham…you reached your goal, Buddy. At EVERY SINGLE game we heard from the fans how much they enjoyed watching you play. This, in a game where size usually matters, your passion and heart carried you so far.
As you take your first steps in heaven, you will meet your Grandma Shirley Winfield for the first time. You will be reunited with Grandpa Phil. You will surely ride through beautiful country on any of our stock that went before you…Moonshine, Happy, or Mork. Trotting behind to the end of the driveway will be Miss Kitty, Honkey, Yukon, Jaeger, Stuey, and Dodge.
Wyatt, you will be missed beyond what words can express. It is now our purpose in life to honor and cherish your spirit by living fully and continuing your legacy as a great friend to so many.
We love you forever…..Mom and Dad.

Jay & Bridgett-
This is something I don’t even know how to start. =( Wyatt was a huge part of Jordan and my life through the years. It all began with Jordan and Wyatt going to school together and then LOTS of baseball!!! Those years will NEVER be forgotten. I have many pictures of Wyatt playing baseball through the years that I would like to send to you both. He always had a smile on his face that would light up your spirits, and a competive side to him that words can’t describe. When I heard about Wyatt, my heart sank because he was such a huge part of our lives in so many ways. Jordan has been in a “zone” since his passing away and has shed many tears for him, as Jordan said “he was like family to me, mom”. He was like a brother and a son to soo many people. He will NEVER be forgotten……EVER!!!! I love both of you and know if you need anything at all, from Jordan or myself, please contact either one of us on facebook and let us know. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. We love you…. Kendy/Jordan Carpenter

Jay and Bridgette,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Our memories of Wyatt during all the years playing hockey together, will always be cherished. The trips to Minot, the State Champioship in Butte, the early days of the Thunderbades, are all great memories, but we enjoyed Wyatt every day we shared with him, no matter where we were. He was a light to so many, many people. We had a bull calf born about the time Wyatt passed, so we have named him after Wyatt, and will keep him to foster new calves. He is a bit small, and tough as nails…. Let us know if we can ever help you in any way
All our love,
The Fithians

We are so sorry for your loss. Wyatt was truly beautiful. He was always kind and encouraging to the young Hockey players in the levels below him. He became an inspiration and a role model for many. Watching him skate was almost as magnificent as his smile. He will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Our Dearest Brigette~
We are devastated with this horrible news of this tragic accident that took your only child, Wyatt. We cannot express to you how sorry we are for your loss … just know our hearts are breaking for you. When I read the obituary in the paper last night I kept shaking my head in denial…this can’t be…this can’t be… this cannot be happening to our Brigette. Why? This must be a mistake. Immediately I called Mikayla and Linda. We have cried a million tears for you Brigette. Words cannot explain how our hearts ache for you. We are holding you tight in our thoughts and prayers and would do most anything to take some of your pain away. Stay strong. Just know your little angel is watching over you. We love you Brigette! If there is something we can do for you, please just let us know.
P.S. We (Linda, Mikayla & I ) want you to know … that the obituary is the most beautifully written obituary we have ever read in our lives. It is most touching, in fact, we didn’t even get past the word “Peanut” without losing it. This seems so personal and it should be told in person but it is the truth and is from our hearts.
The Love Family says
Jay and Brigitte, your heartfelt tribute to Wyatt brought us to tears. We are immensely sorry for your loss and our thoughts and prayers are of course with you. Wyatt was obviously well loved by many and especially by his brothers on the Horns. Many of his former teammates are flying in from across the country to honor him, that speaks volumes about your son. May God hold Wyatt in the palm of his hand.
Sincerely, Steve, Mary Frances and #11 Patrick Love, Plano, TX
Kevin Ebert says
Dear Jay and Brigitte,
Your son was one of the best young man I had a privilege of knowing. Everyday since I heard about his death, he has not left my thoughts. One of my favorite memories of Wyatt was the way he smiled at every stupid little joke I told in the dugout at baseball games. He was one of the coolest kids I had ever met. Another great memory of Wyatt was at the beginning of a baseball game his father and him were playing catch and they warmed up and started to throw fast toss to each other and every throw Wyatt had the biggest smile on his face. That moment will remind me of Wyatt almost everyday. He was loved by many, especially me. He will live on in all our hearts forever and that is a gift that Wyatt has left that I will cherish everyday for the rest of my days. Again I am deeply saddened by his passing. But because of school I will not be able to make it to the viewing this Wednesday. I wanted to write this so that I could be there in spirit. Wyatt was my teammate but even more he was my friend.
My thoughts are with your family Jay and Brigitte.
Kevin and the entire Ebert family

Kyle Holling says
Jay and Brigitte,
My first memory’s of Wyatt are him being on the team against me in baseball, every time he got up our team knew they better be on their toes because this kid usually will make something happen. One summer i got the privilege to play on a travel team with him. Although he couldn’t make it to every single game that summer, when he was there he made a big difference. After that me and Wyatt became friends although we never hung out a whole lot outside of that, I always thought very highly of him. The summer of 2010 Wyatt and I had summer school together haha! He pulled up in the dusty old farm truck and I thought thank god I have someone to talk to! We mostly would talk about all the things we wanted to do with our trucks, he’d tell me how he was going to make that truck look good one day. It wasn’t until the “priest pass mud incident” that I saw him again, and boy did that truck look different (even though it was stuck up to the doors) but it sure looked good. I haven’t stopped thinking about your family and your son. God bless

Jay & Brigitte,
This is the toughest loss we can imagine. It resonates with all of us who have kids. Wyatt was a firecracker. He lit up everyone around him. We’ve never seen anyone pack so much into 19 years. We won’t forget him.

Dear Winfield family
Sorry to have read about Wyatt . I wish to express my condolence. Fuzz is my cousin. From what I have read about Wyatt I am sorry that I never met this gentleman.
Glen and Jean Hook says
Brigitte and Jay, Our hearts are breaking along with yours. Thank you for sharing him with us. His annimated face and sweet disposition, even at 6 weeks, wrapped our hearts with joy and it remained that way every hour we got to spend with him. Your tribute to Wyatt is so perfect and he would be giving a big grin to know that his smile and indomitable spirit meant so much to so many. You both treasured the gift of Wyatt and you gave the love and encouragement that helped him grow into an amazing young man and the world is a better place for his being a part of it. From his first haircut to sharing a pizza after a hockey game, he gave us memories that will never leave us. You are both in our prayers and thoughts, and here if you need us. Glen and Jean
Renee & Dennis Cox, Steilacoom, Wa says
It was a hot, August, Saturday afternoon. The day of the Annual Steilacoom City Wide Garage Sale. Several familes along Short Street were participating, including us and our wonderful neighbors Philip & Christa Bellefleur. It turned out to be the weekend Wyatt was visiting his grandparents. The cutest 10 year old peanut; he crossed the yard and came over to view our displays. Quietly, he picked up a pair of gloves and tried them on. Didn’t say a word, but smiled that big smile and we watched him go over and close in on Grampa. Soon Wyatt returned & asked Dennis how much the gloves were…….with Wyatt’s big eyes watching Dennis’s every move; a neighborly price agreed upon and Wyatt paid up smiling. Dennis asked him if he knew what they were for, & of course Wyatt knew, “they were a pilot’s flying gloves”. He showed that huge smile of happy satisfaction when he crossed the yard to show Grampa. That face is unforgettable. Our hearts melted on the spot.
It was also nothing for Philip and Christa to call us up and say they were going to Wyatt’s hockey game (where ever it was, Montana to Canada) and drive hours to see it, only to return the very next day. Devotion, pride, mutual affection and love. Shared by all of us for the love of a boy who will be carried inside our hearts forever.

Jay and Bridgette, my families hearts are broken by the loss of Wyatt. To know you both, it is not a surprise that Wyatt was such a great young man. The impact you made on his life and on so many other people was truly a gift to be cherished by all of us. He was the fiercest competitor the kind of guy you wanted on your team and hated to be on the other team. He always had a kind word and a time for Cade and Em. He taught Caleb how to drive when he was 10 years old.. He was a son that all of us would have been proud of to call our own. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you both. Please let us know if there is anything we can do. Love the Kidders

Your tribute to Wyatt’s life was beautifully written. You are amazing parents who offered your son so many wonderful opportunities to experience life. My heart is heavy for both of you, I can’t begin to express how terribly sorry I am for your loss. Jay and Brigette,
My heart is breaking for you guys! I remember first meeting Wyatt when he was just 2. Wyatt and Jacob became fast friends and even though they only saw each other maybe once a year, they always picked up right where the left off. My favorite memory is the time the “hunted” the bunny on the hillside next to the lake house. They were so determined to get him, and when they did they both cried! At the tender age of 8 the hunt was important but yet they were sad the bunny died. The funniest part was the look on their face when Mom (Maggie) suggested she make rabbit stew! I think after the carp indecent eating the bunny was not going to be an option. I wish i could be there to give you all hugs! Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you! Remember this is good bye for now not good bye forever. You will be with Wyatt again, and for now he will always be with you in your memories and in the love you have.
My deepest sympathies,
Jaime

I’ll never forget the day in middle school that I was having a bad day so I was sitting by myself at lunch and all of a sudden a random guy came up to me and said it looks like you could use a smile and sat down and started making me laugh. From then on Wyatt always had a smile for me. I regret not staying in touch with Wyatt in high school. Wyatt you are greatly missed my thoughts and prays go out to your family. I express my greatest condolences to you yet no words can express how I wish I could ease your pain. I did not know Wyatt well, but what I knew was he loved his family, passion for hockey, fabricating and welding. Wyatt was a very talented young man, and I know you are all so very proud of the man he grew to be. Wyatt was a male replica of his mom beautiful and caring as the day is long. My heart truly aches for your loss; you are all in my prayers.

The Parkhouse Family says
Jay and Bridgette … What a beautiful tribute to a great young man. Wyatt played a very special role in our sons lives. Branden was the first to come play in Helena on the Bighorns and Wyatt became a “little” brother of sorts. Then when Ryan went to Helena, they formed a very special bond. The times we were visiting to watch the Bighorns we always knew we would be met with Wyatt’s infectious smile. Such a polite young man, obviously filled with such love from his family.
Ryan is in Helena to represent our family in honoring your son. We hold all memories very close in our hearts, which breaks for you. We will always hold the memories dear and cannot wait to see his smiling face again … As they all meet center ice in Heaven!

From the first Bighorns game we attend in 2011 Wyatt had captured the heart of our Greyson. He picked Wyatt as his favorite Bighorn and for that I am eternally grateful. Wyatt was so gracious with Grey and even gave him his first hockey stick. Greyson was so excited because Wyatt had even signed it for him. It became his prize possession. It has been the show and tell object at school more than once. Greyson always made sure he saw Wyatt and got “knucks” from him after the games while he held the curtain for the players. Over the last year, his Wyatt memorabilia has grown from a stick, to include a signed puck and a bell. However, his most favorite? It’s last years individual player picture of Wyatt just before nationals. We appreciate the mentor your son was for ours and we will be eternally grateful for all of the memories we have of seeing Greyson light up when Wyatt walked into the room. Those memories are my favorite given to me by #15. Thank you for sharing such an amazing son and respected young man with our family. Sincerely, Chad, Olivia, Bryce and Greyson
Bo Miller and family says
Brigitte and Jay,
We were so sorry to hear/read about Wyatt’s passing. Although our boys never played on a Helena hockey team together when we lived in Helena (four years) we really enjoyed watching Wyatt play when the opportunity arose. One particular memory I have is one night we were at practice and it was Miles’ birthday and I had brought a cake to the rink and you mentioned it was also Wyatt’s birthday, so our boys shared the same birthday but exactly a year apart. My memory of Wyatt is that of a cute, happy and nice boy. I can’t imagine what you both are going through and I hope through your friends, family and faith you will be ok. Take care.
Jayme Rupp says
Jay, Bridget and Family,

Jay, Fuzz and family,
Jay, I’m not sure if you remember me; my mom & dad (Loiue & Muggs Eastman) were very good friends with Fuzz & Shirley. Daddy was the original owner of the Windmill Club in Billings. I used to babysit you when you were pretty young.
My sister Cathy called to tell me me about your son, Wyatt. I’m so sorry to hear this news. It’s a terrible thing to go through. He sounded like a wonderful young man. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Lori, David and Dalton Bowles says
Our hearts ache for you Jay and Brigitte! Wyatt touched our family in ways that changed us forever – we loved him so very much. We took a “hankering” to his infectious personality and often found ourselves laughing with some of the boys great adventure stories – The best years of Dalton’s life were spent with Wyatt on Deal Lane and as well as both on and off the ice. They fought, as well as support one another, like true brothers. While we cannot understand why, just know “faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe”. The love that you have for him as parents will never be broken. Until we meet again sweet Wyatt!
Marilyn Trusty says
Brigitte and Jay,
what an absolutely beautiful service today, both of you were outstanding and your letter to Wyatt heartwarming. There wasn’t a dry eye in the packed stadium. I know Wyatt couldn’t be more proud of his family. You both did an outstanding job of raising such a wonderful, caring young man. Good job!

Wyatt, my young buck-a-roo. Although we have not seen each other in a while, the memories will last forever. Remember the times you and dad came out to the ranch in the mountains, to bring hay and pick up the seasons fire wood. We usually managed to get the football going. You had one hell of an arm. Remember feeding the mulies that would come up to the house for a visit. You loved that, There is a big hole in my heart since hearing of your tragic accident. I know the Lord will have you teaching packing and hunting to the greenies, as well as other things you were so good at. Know you are loved and missed down here. We are all poorer for your absence.
Mark Schneider says
Brigitte,
My heart aches for you and what you are going through. I can’t imagine anything worse than losing a child. It brings back difficult memories, Brigitte, of a terrible time 33 years ago when we lost MIke in a similar way. I pray that you have family and friends to pull you through this difficult time the way you and Trish helped my family. I wish I could somehow help ease your burden. May it help in some way to know that I am praying for you and thinking about you. I talked to Trish Sauriol McCabe tonight as she let me know what had happened. We talked about that retreat so many years ago and the priest that talked about it being o.k. to let our anger and emotions out. I wish we could be there to give you a hug right now and help share your burden.
I never knew Wyatt, but he sounds like a wonderful young man. I pray you can find strength through the joy that memories of him will bring you. And I pray for a peace and comfort that surpasses all understanding that can only be granted through our Lord and Savior. May He hold you and bring you comfort.
