In Memory Of

Zelda Johnson, age 92, of Helena

March 15, 1921 – January 22, 2014

Zelda A. Johnson, 92, of Helena passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Apple Rehab Cooney.  Zelda was born March 15, 1921 to Howard and Sally Green near Welch, West Virginia.  Zelda married Charles Lehman in 1942 and in 1943 traveled to London, England where Charles Lehman was stationed as a bomber pilot during World War II.  After the war, Zelda moved to Montana where Charles Lehman was stationed at the Great Falls air base.

Zelda and Charles Lehman divorced shortly after moving to Montana and Zelda moved to Helena, where for many years, she worked for the State of Montana and the City of Helena.

Zelda moved to Lincoln, Montana in the early 60’s and married Avery Johnson.  Avery and Zelda owned and ran a hardware store, Ponderosa Hardware, in Lincoln for 12 years.  Zelda and Avery moved to Missouri after retiring and selling the hardware store.  Avery Johnson passed away in Missouri and Zelda moved back to Helena to be near family.

Zelda enjoyed fishing, hunting, card games and painting.  Zelda enjoyed carpentry and she and Avery built their homes in Lincoln and Missouri.  She later bought, remodeled, and sold a couple homes in Missouri.

Zelda was thrifty in all that she did, but was very generous and shared what she had.

Zelda is preceded in death by her parents; brothers Meryl Green of West Virginia and Ernie Green of Helena

Zelda is survived by sons, Tom (Sandy) Lehman of Helena, Mike (Barbara) Brown of Bay City, Oregon; a brother Thaniel Green of South Carolina; a sister Edith Cook of West Virginia; sister-in-law Jean Green of Helena; three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating Zelda’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Life Covenant Church, 800 N. Hoback Street.  A reception will follow the memorial service at the church with burial to take place following the reception at Forestvale Cemetery.  Memorials in Zelda’s name are suggested to God’s Love, 533 N Last Chance Gulch St, Helena, MT 59601.
