On the evening of February 4, 2013, Doris passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes. Doris was 87 days from her 96th birthday.
Doris was born in East Helena on April 24, 1917 to Wallace and Ruby V Jones. Both parents were direct descendants of Montana pioneer families. Her great grandfather John Jones and his family arrived in the Helena Valley in 1864 and started a ranch (now partially under Lake Helena) which is still in operation as “End of Trail” on Helberg Lane. John was elected to serve in the 1870 Territorial Congress to represent Lewis and Clark and Jefferson counties.
Doris married George Schneider in the spring of 1935 while they were seniors in high school. Following graduation George went to work for his father as a bartender at Hap’s Place. His father “Hap” founded the bar in April of 1935. George and Doris assumed ownership in February 1941 after the untimely death of Hap. They continued ownership until 1975. In 1958 Doris and George, along with business partner, Dr. William Cashmore built Capital City Bowl which was located on Front Street, now the site of the Montana Fund Building.
Doris enjoyed bowling and spending as much time as she could in the cabins on Stemple Pass. She was a long time member of the Elks, Moose, Montana Tavern Association, Bowling Proprieties association, and the American Bowling congress.
She is preceded in death by her husband George Frank Schneider; father Wallace Jones, Mother, Ruby Jones, sister Ella Jones, infant sister Ida Jones.
Doris is survived by her sons Leon G. Schneider (Widower, Gloria F. deceased) of Helena, and son Thomas E. Schneider (JoAnn) of Helena. Seven grandchildren, Kevin of Bozeman, Brian of Belgrade, Shelly of Portland, Perry of Missoula, Jennifer of Portland, George of Pheonix, and Teresa of Yuma, AZ.

My mother, Arlene Filzen Gocker, was a granddaughter of Elizabeth Schneider. James Harter Sr. has been great at doing a family tree in introducing me to many of my mother’s relatives. Being 75 years old I appreciate learning about family that I never knew. Interesting thing about Doris, a beautiful lady, is being involved in a bowling alley and the Tavern League. Now I know where my bowling abilites came from and my ability to enjoy a beer now and then. This was totally FORBIDDEN by my mother but that didnt stop me. I bowled in many leagues for years, won many awards and started Junior bowling in Beaver Dam, WI. My daughter is still a coach for kids. My son, Dan, has won many awards in bowling, including bowler of the year, so many 300 games he doesnt have enough fingers for them and 700 and 800 series. Must be in the Schneider blood. I have 3 grandsons bowling in our local traveling league through school and two greatgrandsons who are good bowlers and are in the high school traveling league. And oh yes, my son enjoys his beer although now at 55, he drinks “64”. Wish I had known your mother and many of the other Schneider relation. My mother told me stories of her days in Helena, MT. R.I. Condolences to the Schneider family. Doris was blessed to live a long life. Please be assured of God’s promise that one day we will see our loved ones again happy and healthy, John 5:28, 29 says, “all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.” I pray this promise along with loving memories of Doris fill your heart with comfort and peace.
