Our mother, Dorothy Rae (Wetmore) Senecal, was born in Lewiston, Idaho on February 13, 1935 to Raymond and Agnes Wetmore and has passed away on September 10, 2015. She was the oldest of four siblings and always looked after her sisters just as a good older sister would. After high school and a college education, she left Washington State and became a rural school teacher in Montana. She obtained her first teaching job in Miles City, Montana in the early seventies. She spoke of a “teacheradge” and a dwelling where her water came from an outdoor hand pump.
Dorothy later met Robert Howard Senecal around 1973 and was married. By 1978, she was blessed with two children, Robert and Mary Kate. Mom cherished her career choice and eventually found herself planted in her favorite grade level in Philipsburg, Montana. Third grade apparently was the very best because she taught that grade for around thirty years until she retired in the late 90’s. In fact, she even taught both her own children in that grade along with many, many others who have fond memories of her as their teacher in Philipsburg.
Our mother was an extremely caring person. She gave everything to her children while keeping little for herself. She gave to others as well, even up to the time of her death, with her many monetary donations to various charities throughout the world. She always wanted to help. Dorothy’s latest passion was her grandchildren. She loved them more than words can describe. In mom’s more able years, she assisted with looking after them while their parents were working. This was more than just babysitting to mom, however, because she put teacher background to work and supplemented their knowledge with preschool education.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Agnes Wetmore as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She is survived by her son, Robert (Katherine) Senecal, her daughter Mary Kate (Ira) French, and her grandchildren Audrey Senecal, Anna Senecal, Joseph Senecal, and Reilly Allik. She is also survived by her sisters Karen White, Barbra Tinney, and Leanna Ammons and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and students.
I will remember my mom as my friend because, besides a mother, that is what she was too me. I could talk with her about anything and she always understood and had some wisdom to offer. Mom, we will miss you and, until we are together again, please know that we love you with all our hearts and are extremely thankful to be your children, grandchildren, and friends. God bless you and keep you.
Per Dorothy’s request, there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy would have wanted you to donate to your local school district to assist teachers and students. Please visit below to offer a condolence to the family or to share a memory of Dorothy.

Your mom was my third grade teacher and one of my favorite grade school teachers. I think I was in the first class she taught in P-burg and she taught my nephews (Seitz boys) ten or more years later. She was always kind and thoughtful and an excellent teacher! I’m sorry for your loss. Adel Johnson
