Howard Homme of Jefferson City ended a long battle with cancer on January 5, 2011. He was 94 years old at the time of his death, surrounded by his family who all loved and adored him.
He was born and raised in Outlook, Montana. His parents were Martin and Laura Homme. After high school he went to California to make his contribution to the war effort. He was a welder for Lockheed Aircraft. If you ever flew a P-38, chances are he put that plane together. He went to Ireland during World War II to again make planes. He was lucky enough to see the Spruce Goose on her maiden voyage. Up for a very short amount of time and then back down. What an exciting adventure for a young man standing on the docks.
Some people think 93 is a “good long life” unless you happen to be one of the family members left behind. We don’t think it was long enough. When the lights went out on Daddy, this world became a dimmer place. He was the light of our lives and the inspiration of our childhood.
His greatest accomplishments according to his children were that of being the most wonderful “Daddy” that God ever created. He provided a nurturing and loving home for the Homme kids. There was never a harsh word spoken in neither the home nor a time that LOVE was not present.
Daddy loved to pitch horseshoes and for many years he and his brother Morris competed in many tournaments. At the age of 86 Daddy still loved to pitch horseshoes and would challenge anyone willing to pitch against him . He pitched in the world championship tournament and took first place in his category.
We have an Awesome God who gave us an awesome father. If Daddy touched your life you knew that you were among the blessed. As his children we knew we had been given a gift. We are the adult children of this awesome man and we come to this journey of our lives with broken hearts.
He is preceded in death by his identical twin brother, Harold, his brothers Roy, Raymond, Lloyd and sister Fern. His parents were Martin and Laura Homme.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen; brother, Morris (Lida) Homme; daughters, Carol of Marsing, Idaho (recently of Jefferson City, Montana), Tracie (Scott) Cameron of Maupin, Oregon, and Roberta (Ken) Threet of Montana City, Montana; son, Dana of Florence Montana. Grandchildren are Chad, Casey, Terry, Keri, Namie, Travis, Denny and Lindsay, Zolia and Jolienne. Great-grandchildren are Chance, Tennielle, Erik, Cannon, Robert, Klay, Kord, Lexi, Kennedy, Christian, and Elias. He also leaves behind nieces Laurie (Marvin) Giese, Gay (Ted) Putnam, Jean (Ralph) McElmurry and Jan (Rick) Britt, Rita, Jeanne, Lora, and Alice who were all lucky enough to be like a second set of daughters.
Daddy—rest in peace. You leave behind a grateful family, who will miss you all the days of our lives. You have been our hero, our mentor, our teacher and our compass.
A celebration of his life will be at Helena First Assembly of God Church, 2210 Dodge Avenue, Helena, Montana, on January 13 at 11:00 am with a reception will follow. Cremation has already taken place.
We wish to express our thanks to Dr. Tom Weiner and staff for all the care and support they have shown over the past years, and to Dr. Hay, Dr. Huntley who have supported us beyond what words can express, and to David Kline of Frontier Hospice . You have made a horrible situation tolerable. To you all, we say Thank you for leaving a forever foot print in our lives and on our hearts.
In lieu of flowers we suggest memorials to a Hospice of your choice. Arrangments were entrusted to Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home.
