Larry was born to William (Bill) M. Lloyd and Alice Grass Lloyd at the Barrett Hospital in Dillon, Montana on October 10th, 1934. Growing up in Dillon, Larry enjoyed fishing and hunting with his dad, friends and his dog Mickey. Mickey held a special place in Larry’s heart and was one of the first of many well-loved canine companions.
Larry attended grade school and high school in Dillon and graduated from Beaverhead High School in 1952. He enrolled at Western Montana College and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, majoring in mathematics and science. Between high school and college, Larry worked on ranches, drove truck, worked in the fishing industry in Ketchikan, Alaska and then trucked and ran heavy equipment on road and airbase construction in Alaska during the summers.
In 1958, Larry was hired to teach science and mathematics at Three Forks High School. Larry stayed a second year and taught mathematics. In 1960 he accepted an offer from the Department of Army Overseas Schools to teach advanced mathematics and physics at the Kubasaki Senior High School in Okinawa. While living in Okinawa he enjoyed traveling to cities throughout Asia. After two years he transferred to the Paris American High School in Paris, France where he taught mathematics for a year.
In 1963 Larry returned to Dillon where he worked on the construction of the Clark Canyon Dam and on Interstate Highway projects south of Dillon. In late November he accepted a job as a Health Physicist at the then National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS) near Idaho Falls, Idaho where he was employed until June 1967. Larry was then offered a Public Health Fellowship at the University of Minnesota to work toward a Masters Degree in Radiological Health. It was there that he met his wife to be, Darlene Ahlers, a Minnesota farm girl. Larry and Darlene were married in November 1968. Larry received his Masters Degree a month later.
In January 1969 Larry and Darlene moved to Idaho Falls where Larry again went to work at the NRTS as a Health Physicist. In June 1969 Larry and Darlene moved to Helena where he began working for the Montana State Department of Health where he remained employed until he retired in 1990.
Larry was a long time member of the Dillon Elks Lodge, and in recent years took great pleasure in returning to Dillon for stag nights to visit with friends.
Larry is survived by his wife Darlene, son Bill (Miki) and grandchildren Brent and Kaci of Helena, and daughter Suzy (fiancé Matt) of Seattle, Washington.

Dearest Darlene and Family, We are so happy to have met Larry these last few years with our Creighton group. He was a delight! And of course Jack and he could have talked until they both had no voice left! Truly good friend. And his last gift to all of us was finding the lovely lodging place near Glacier last summer even though he was unable to join us. I know you will all miss him terribly. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this trying time.
Love Anna Mary

During my first session in the Montana House of Representatives in 1977, Larry worked with me on a piece of legislation that was very important to me. He saw flaws and unintended consequences that would have doomed it’s passage. He didn’t need to do what he did but I appreciate his efforts. The bill passed and became law. I will always be grateful for his help and interest in my bill. I’ve never forgotten the kindness he showed a new and inexperienced legislator.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
With deepest sympathy,
Mike Cooney

I remember him as a great math teacher, a wonderful family friend, and a terrific neighbor. He was special. I meant to come visit when I was home and didn’t do it. Now,…needless to say..I would have liked to have seen him one last time.
Our love and prayers to you, Darlene and also to Bill and Suzy. I know how much you all will miss him. And what a wonderful grandpa, Brent and Kaci will miss in the years to come.
God bless and bring peace to you all.

We are so sorry to get the news about Larry. Trips to Dillon from Butte when we were young were always special when the Lloyd families would get together. Larry always made sure that he had time to spend with his ‘ little’ cousins and made it fun. Larry will be missed from our family. Our thoughts are with Darlene and family

Darlene, Billy and Suzie, you are in my prayers. I would bet there is a good reunion going on with Vandy, Margaret and Larry. May the memories you have help through this difficult time.

Always enjoyed the times I spent with Larry. The crazy fishing trips to Cliff & Wade Lakes down by Yellowstone Park. Listening to Larrry & Bob Solomon talking about their fishing escapades out in the Straits of Juan de Fuca. Great person to work with while at the Montana State Department of Health. Such a great story teller. Wonderful friends make wonderful memories.
